98 Grand Am

Hey guys new to the forums and looking for the right kind of oil for me... this is what I know...

98 Grand am 4cylinder 2.4l

The car is somewhat of a POS... traded it for a motorcycle with my brother and he is notorious for being hard on cars. 135k on it and only problem I have with it is it will stutter when I press the gas when I first start it up.

Suggested oil is 5w30
I drive 400 miles a week all highway miles, outside of that I drive a few miles to the store once a week but not a substantial amount. I don't drive it hard I set it on cruise control at 73 for 40 minutes both ways.

Oh yea live in central pa... 70-80 in the summer 10-30 in the winter.

Looking for an oil with a long change interval, willing to spend cause I am a procrastinator!

Welcome to the site! I would run Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 5w30 for 8-10K (go 8K and get it looked at by Blackstone, see UOA section for more info) And a good filter like FRAM Xtended Guard, Purolator Pure 1 or Bosch Distance +.

The starting sequence of this engine is controled by the computer until it comes back to fast idle. Don't apply any throttle until it idles smoothly. This may help, or I don't understand your question. And WELCOME to BITOG !! FWIW--Oldtommy

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30.....should easily do an OCI of 12K.....and the
Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter.

Put a bottle of Redline Si-1 Fuel System Cleaner in the gas tank at few hundred miles prior to each oil change.

An possibly (if its not to much trouble)....MMO in the gas tank at each fill-up (3 0z. per 10 gallons).

I use Mobil 1 5w30 extended performance(EP) 15k mile oil in my 2001 Grand Am GT and change it once a year. I also use the 5w30 EP oil filter as well. Total cost for the oil+filter is 40 bucks. If you do go with the Mobil 1 I would probably change the oil after 5k and then go with 10-15k mile oil change intervals after that.

Also the Grand am's do like to be driven hard

They do? Mine always sounded like it was going to explode if I pressed the gas pedal too hard. Yet, I loved my '97 2.4L

I used all sorts of crazy oil combos in that car. It always did fine, from 5w-20 to 10w30. If I were the OP, I'd use a good quality 0w or 5w30.

I have only driven grand am's with the V6 engine.

Thanks for the info guys... Guess I did ok using the Pennzoil Platinum synthetic and the fram filter... Ill check out the Mobil 1 Extended Performance as well.

i'm not trying to hijack the thread but what about a '99 Grand Am. same 4 cy engine, 160k miles. i've always used conventional oil and i'm consider Amsoil, M1 high mileage or Mobil 1 Extended Performance for extended OCI. i drive about 18,000 mile a year. i'm leaning with Amoil and i do have a few reps/dealers in my area.
