I have a 93 t-bird 5.0 HO w/ 130k miles on the clock. I was wondering what weight and kind of oil to use. I have had a ton of 5.0 in trucks 40wt 15w-40 and 20w-50 used and owned a couple of fox bodies that i used 20w-50 50 or 60 wt in, i was thinking syn 15w-50 20w-50 15w-40 or rp 40/50wt what do you goes think. the car see 50/50 mixed city/hyway and is not babied most days. what can i say its fast. thank you

Why so thick? I'm pretty sure Ford speced 5w-30. Holy Cow I just looked at their site! The Amsoil site shows 5w-20 being shown. Ford must of back speced this T bird from 30wt to 20wt.......

I would not run any heavier than 30wt, or at the absolute heaviest 40wt.
50wt and 60wt is super thick. No reason to go that extreme especially since you are going synthetic.

Dear [censored]!!

M1 0w40. Motorcraft filter, or if you are feeling thrifty, get a Donaldson P169071.

They do not need heavier than a 40-weight. They spec a 30 from the factory.

I had the same model year Cougar XR-7 with same engine; sold it with 168K miles on it and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it when sold! I was the original owner, used Pennzoil bulk oil (I want to say 10W-30) and filters with 5K oci's and the car was driven very enthusiastically most days. I use better oil and filters now on my current cars, but that Cougar did not receive any extra special care and was a very nice car.

Just use a good syn 30wt oil and you will be doing a great job protecting that small block ford. If it really makes you feel warm and fuzzy use a 5w-40 oil. But seeing as you are in Michigan if it was my car I would use 5w-30 because of the winter temps.

The 40wt will help some if you consume a little bit of oil over the 30wt.

I run 5W-30 conventional in my 175K mile Mustang in sig with a Motorcraft filter.

I wouldn't run anything thicker than a 10W-30 unless it's burning oil. Even then, I would try a high mileage oil before I went to 10W-40.

Conventional oils, Motorcraft synthetic blend, or a high milage oil are all practical choices that should be able to safely run 5K mile oil changes unless your driving habits can be classified as "severe service."

Rotella T5 10w-30 or Mobil 1 HM 10w-30 is what I would use.

When did a car that has a 9sec 0-60 time become fast???

i understand know with some research that ford back spec'd this car to run 5w-20. 20 weight will be a strong option since i use it in three other fords i own. my escort has 465+k miles on origanal motor never been touched and less then 1.5 qts of make up the last 200k at 15+k oci's

thanks everyone

Nothing wrong running a 40 or 50 weight (maybe the 10W40 in the winter and the 5W/15W/20W50 in the heat of the summer).

Do you race and/or drive it hard?
