I got a 91 ford fullsize bronco 5.0 4x4 recently and wondering what all the 302 and 351w guys are using for oil and oil filters? What worked and what did not for them? What cleaned it and kept it clean? Mine has 135,000 miles on it. Right now mine just has autozone 10-40 since I had it on hand left over from another vehicle and also used a motorsport oil filter just done oil change but i want to use the best on it and clean out the old oil and keep it cleaned. Right now I have only a rear main seal leek between motor and trans. The guy who owned it before me neglected it.

You want to look into Auto-Rx for cleaning up an engine. Otherwise, it depends on what your habits are for changing oil. Lots to choose from. Filters are varied too. It all depends on your disposition. Longer drains? Stuck in the 3k/3m prison for life?? We here to get you out of that closet if you're riding the fence

What's your orienta-..err... persuasion??.

I plan on using the Auto-Rx soon on the trans so you can use it on engine oil cleaning also? I am not stuck to 3,000 mile oil changes heck i remember when I use to do 7,000 and then 5,000 mile oil changes when i was young on a 87 toyota pickup with the 4clinder 22r engine and used 20-50 in it. Later went to 10 50 in the wenter. We used a lot of toyota oil filters then and when high mileage kicked in then we did 5000 mile oil changes. I personally don't like 10 30 for what its intened for as I know thats how most drive in those conditions. That truck then was getting a lot of highway miles back then. The bronco is going to be high and around town and off road vehicle. It won't be driven a lot anyway and not stop and goes day in day out either. Recreational vehicle, lol. I like to try synthetics but don't want to blow money either but I really don't want to go past 7,000 mile oil changes either. I am thinking on like 5000 or 7000 mile oil changes. Oil filters longs it don't make my truck run worse I don't mind spending 10.00 a filter on if I have to. As far as synthetic in other stuff for the truck i like to try also. I'm not crazy about spending that much on atf though so think on atf I will stay with reg atf not synthetic and everything else I will try. I got to change axle fluids soon anyway. I like to get idea setup when i do my next oil change also what I want to use. All I got her locally is a napa, o'rielly, and autozone. I do have a oil change place that carries amsoil oil and believe gear oil. I am not sure if to stick with stock weight or try the 80/140 weight gear oil. I don't have limited slip or lockers yet.

Currently my 93 F-150 with the 351W has Amsoil HDD 5W-30 oil and an Amsoil Eao-15 filter on it. If you are going to change at 7,000 miles, get the Amsoil XL oil and the Amsoil filter. For the rear end, use one of the Amsoil EP gear oils.

The 302 in my '95 Bronco loves the Rotella T 15w40. I'm pretty sure the '91 was pre-roller lifters so getting something stronger than the SM spec would be good for yours. The 302 is supposed to be a much "looser", old-school engine so a lot of the new thinking in regards to oil doesn't apply. Notice that when Ford went nuts back-specing 5w20 into the '90s they left out the 302 and 351.

When I first got it at 95K I ran a change of SuperTech and one of Pennzoil Platinum and it never seemed to have the power I thought it should. I really wanted to see an improvement with the PP but I got nadda.

This last change I filled it with the Rotella 15w40 and I was stunned by the improvement that made. The oil immediately clouded up as if a lot of grunge had broken up. The leaks from my pan gasket and rear main also slowed down from 1qt/500 to 1qt/1500. The engine is also seems to be much peppier as it is much more willing to rev and roar when you stomp the pedal.

As far as filters I always run the good old Motorcraft FL1A. You can get them just about anywhere and I doubt you would see any improvement from a more expensive choice without going to extended drains (>10K).

I just picked up 2 jugs of Rotella T 10w30 and another FL1A last night. I need to get this heavy stuff out before winter hits here in Chicago. I'm guessing that won't be a real problem for you in TN.

They included the 302 and 351. I know because I have a 351W and its spec'd for 5W-20 now. I found 5W-30 works well, in fact I might try 0W-20 next time.
