86 IROC Z commercial.

Had a 1986 IROC-Z. Was supposed to be an '85. Was on order from Nov '84 until Dec '85 by then was 1986 model year so it got the 3rd brake light mounted on the rear glass which I hated. HP dropped from '85 to '86 about 20 from 210 to 190 as I recall. Took so long to get it built and delivered because of "limited availability". Ordered it with every option except engine block heater, rear window wiper, and T-tops. White with a black interior. Had the most UNcomfortable low back bucket seats in it I've ever sat in! My back couldn't take the seats for more than about 30 minutes at a time. I should have gone with the standard interior and high-back seats. Sold it in 2003 to a local car dealer as a "collectible" for not much less than I paid for it with extremely low miles less than 7,000 on the odo, and had always been garaged.

Three weeks after I bought it, I got to learn about GM's plastic steering columns and how easy it was for someone to bust that apart and steal one too. Luckily for me the culprit that tried to steal it off the workplace parking lot shorted out the horn while he was trying to break the steering lock which caused the horn to blast continuously, which chased him off. I came out to a horn blasting and pieces of plastic on the floorboard.

Got a thing for WHITE or BLACK sports cars..... all types.

No it definitely wasn't. A guy I knew with an 88 auto did some weird shifting thing where he would start in 1st, shift to 2nd during launch, shift back to 1st, then slam it up to 3rd after about half way down the track. I have no clue how he figured this one out but it did seem to get him to the high 14s. I can't imagine it was good for the transmission though. The 700R4 isn't the greatest transmission in the racing world but at least in my 89 IROCZ all I have to go is go from 1 to 2 to D and it will hold the revs until I move to the next gear. Can pull right around a 14 with the current setup, I'd say the subframe connectors are what really helps though. Huge improvement in both handling and keeping the car straight when going.

The AOD Mustangs did the 1-D-1 shuffle! I forgot all about it but it did make the car faster at the expense of transmission longevity. Mine was a 5 speed so I never got to try it.

Off-topic: My father had an '88 E-150 that I regularly drove on CA-9 between Saratoga and Boulder Creek. The descent between Skyline Blvd into Saratoga was PITA with that AOD.

There was no way to hold manual 2nd with that AOD. Downshift into 2nd by shifting into low; if you slowed down too much, the trans would shift into first and stay there. In order to get back into second, you needed to shift back into drive and then back into low.
