Ford's 7.3 Godzilla.. loud!

I'm probably the only person who likes them, but you won't find a more durable independent front than the Ford twin i-beam
One thing that stands out to me is that the Ford is just so much roomier in the driver's seat. The GM twins were smoother riding but noticeably more cramped.

You may be noticing the engine programming to warm up the catalysts.
Ford sure does love that kind of programming. Buddy of mine had a mod-motor mustang. Can't remember which motor it was, 4.6 probably. Little bit boy racer in him and it had an obnoxious exhaust on it. I don't know what Ford does with cam/ignition/injection timing but my god was that thing loud for about the first 30 seconds while it lit off the cats. After that it wasn't so bad but holy crap, it would wake you up in the morning leaving work.

Same guy probably worked on the programming for the 7.3...or they cheated and hit copy/paste. :)

When my former F350 would blow out the exhaust manifolds, it would wake the dead in the cemetery across the street on a cold start! There's no reason it needs to race that high but it did. My old Focus PZEV was worse and would right to 2500+ RPM on a cold start.

Last tow truck I had had the 7.3 Godzilla and it was quiet to me actually. New career in paratransit, the agency buys brand new buses with the 7.3 Godzilla and they were loud at startup and even on the road at times. I wrote one up as something doesn’t seem right and low and behold, the upfitter didn’t do the exhaust right…

That's the thing. His wasn't revving super high, Ford just does something with cam/ignition/injector timing that makes it SUPER loud for the first 30 seconds. After that you can hear things changing and it will idle down a little, but not as much as it quits doing whatever it was doing, be that spraying extra fuel or adjusting the cam timing so more unburned fuel goes out the exhaust.

Be interesting to see it on a graph of what the ECU is doing first thing.

Been watching and experiencing this for many decades.

It's a trade off - you sacrifice ride and turning radius for durability.

All the IFS setups wear out quicker, but ride better.
