Miles on car: ~27,326

Miles on oil: ~6,304

Make-up oil: None

Filter: Mobil 1

Oil: Mobil 1 SS 5W-30

Oil was used between June 6 and August 26 in NYC weather.

I thought the report would be worse since I had

just quit smoking a few weeks after putting this

oil in and have been driving like a maniac ever

since. Lots of WOT with the A/C on, lots of

gridlock, gridlock, traffic, traffic. Even

though the oil thickened up above a 30WT, the TBN

was high and wear was low, so maybe I'll try

another 1,000 miles on the next interval? I have

no idea what's up with the silicon levels. The

Fram air filter is 7,000 miles old, pretty clean,

seated properly and the airbox is tight. It's

weird. Discuss.

Comments:

JOHN: Why is silicon reading so high in your

engine? We don't know. If you know it's coming

from a non-abrasive source, such as an anti-foam

additive or a silicone-based sealer, then we

won't worry about it. Let us know. It doesn't

really look like abrasive dirt, since wear looks

okay. The TBN read 5.7, showing plenty of active

additive remaining in the oil. Insolubles (oil

oxidation due to heat, use and blow-by) were low

at 0.3%, showing good oil filtration. Other than

the mysterious silicon, we have nothing new to

report. You could go longer on this oil.

Wow....looks pretty impresive to me. For all the abuse that you put this truck through, you shouldn't complaint about anything.
As far as the silicon, I would go ahead and check the filter housing and ducts just to make sure it's all sealed up.
Now, I wanted to make a suggestion regarding the oil filter......"if" I were you, I would get the SuperTech from Walt-Mart.....it's cheaper and supposedly better quality....it's a win-win situation!

Nice report. It seems like lately the 5W-30 M-1 has thickened up more. Maybe my imagination. It's still a 30 wt. though. The silicon must not be abrasive as was mentioned. Certainly seems like you could go further. What I would do if I were you do is spin off the M-1 filter at about 5K miles and screw on a Supertech and run at least another 3K miles.

. Since that is a good size filter that will give you some more makeup of fresh oil that in itself is good for 1 or 2 K miles.

Hmm. I already have about 2500 miles on this oil. I think I'll try 7,500 miles with this M1 filter and see what happens. When the cold weather comes I'll bring down the interval to 5,000 due to the cold starts. Plus, my commute is about 7 miles of highway and I only live a few blocks from the highway, so the oil never really gets warmed up even in the summer. Thank God for synthetic oil.

I don't think it's your imagination, I think someone at Mobil 1 is listening to us!

If someone knows for sure they have a very recent batch of Supersyn 5w30, they should send it for a VOA! I wouldn't be suprised if the viscosity came in around 10.5 to 11.0 cst instead of 10.0

Jonhicon,
I must've been smokin' crack.....I guess the Fram "air" filter threw me off.
Anyway, for the next change, I would run an ST filter...it is way cheaper than the M1, provides good filtering and is way less restrictive.
