I saw a previous post somewhere on here that said for a 2008 Dodge Ram hemi engine to NOT us the 30 weight as the MDS needed the 20. I had never heard that nor seen that on the RAM forum. Can someone elaborate? Thanks in advance.

A friend of mine is a Hyundai Master Tech. He has a 2011 Laramie and a 2018 Rebel. He uses Mobil 1 5W30 original in both.

Some folks go strictly by the thin CAFE viscosity in the owners manual. I think my way through it, and use 5w-30 after the warranty expires on my vehicles.

It seems to be a myth that won't die.

Agreed, not as long as people keep posting the same nonsense over and over.

For about the first 20 minutes of your drive, that 0/5W20 is WAYYYYYYYYY thicker than it is at operating temperatures. Like 5 to 10 X or more thicker, depending on outside temps. And the engine still runs just fine.

Using a 30 grade oil won't hurt a thing.

I too,concur.

5w-20 is fine in the Hemi as long as you're not putting large loads on it all the time. If it's just a run-around vehicle or a highway cruiser, 5w-20 will protect the engine just fine and even give you better MPG if that matters to you. I put 5w-20 Royal Purple Synthetic in my mom's Grand Cherokee Hemi and it runs very smooth. I do prefer that a synthetic 5w-20 be used because if you ever do run into a situation where oil temps rise drastically, the synthetic will remain more stable in higher heat.

I used 5W30 in My HEMI Ram for years and the MPG average was 19.7MPG. Well above the EPA rating.

Use whatever you like, it won't hurt. Personally, I like M1 HM 10w-30 in mine.

If anyone attempts to admonish you for not using a Xw-20 oil, ask them to please explain the difference between the MDS systems on the 5.7L Hemi versus the 6.xL Hemi, because the 6.xL Hemi says to use 0w-40 oil. (Hint: there is no difference between the MDS systems except the engine in which they are installed.)
