5w-30 and hot summer

I use M1 5W30 in my Sienna all year round with no problems.This engine(1MZ)has a reputation for tough on oil and runs darn hot
but it stands up to it in this application

I don't see any benifit in selecting 10W30 over a 5W30 with M1 or for most oils for that matter as long as the engine is well cared for

Mobil 1 5W seeems to hold u well in high heat. But I'd still opt for the 10w30 Mobil 1. That's a personal preference based on nothing.
Don't you have more chance to stay in grade with the 10w30?quote:

0W30 year round in one of mine. Shoudl be no problem for you with the 5W

My answer would be yes and no. I dislike A1-rated 5-30's, but they may be OK if there's no consumption. A3-rated one's are better, but with the same connotation.
Both will work, but I'm sceptical during periods of:
1. temps over 30C
2. heavy load eg. towing, racing, high speed
3. 10k OCI's
It's basically a bare 'minimum' in my books as far as protection.

What does the owner's manual say to use? And I was under the impression that 5w30 oils weren't available in Australia as no vehicles are spec'd for it. Oh and yes 107*F is da*m hot
. Even though I use 5W-20 oil year round in NJ I would seriously consider using a 40 or 50 weight oil for those temps.

After I whined for months about not being able to resolve this very problem (5w30 versus 10w30), I did finally decided to use 10w30 because the ambient temp. where I live is high enough and the flash point on 10w30 is much better than 5w30 (almost 40 degress F higher in M1).quote:

My 2002 Mopar manual shows a high temp cutoff of 100F/38C for 5w30 (10w-30 is preferred for temps above that), but I presume they're assuming that dino oils will most likely be used.
Viscosity, High Shear (HTHS) from spec sheets:
Citgo 10w30 (dino): 3.0
Kendall GT-1 10w30 (dino): 3.1
Pennzoil 10w30 (dino): 3.2
Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30: 3.08
Kendall GT-1 Synthetic 5w30: 3.1
My manual calls for 10w30 dino oil, which generally have HTHS numbers of 3.0-3.2 per above, for temps above 100F/38C. The more common brands of full-synthetic 5w30 oils appear to have HTHS in the 3.1 range, so it would appear you've essentially met the manual's 10w30 protection requirement. Perhaps a more knowledgable oilphile can confirm this.

I use 0-20 M1, so 5-30 seems like axle grease to me. {take it easy, just poetic license}
Mobil 1 5w30 will do just fine. We have lots of Fords and Hondas running 5W-20 conventional oil here in Las Vegas all year. Temps over 42 C or 107 F are common here during the summer time.
Forget what you read here. Only trust your oil pressure gage.
