Hi.
Can we use fully synthetic 5w-30 grade engine oil in hot summer day's?
[PAO or PAO/Ester blend oils]
Ex: 42c'ambient air temperature?
Thank you.

I use M1 5W30 in my Sienna all year round with no problems. This engine(1MZ)has a reputation for tough on oil and runs darn hot

but it stands up to it in this application

.

I don't see any benifit in selecting 10W30 over a 5W30 with M1 or for most oils for that matter as long as the engine is well cared for

M1 we

to you.

Mobil 1 5W seeems to hold u well in high heat. But I'd still opt for the 10W-30 Mobil 1. That's a personal preference based on nothing.

Don't you have more chance to stay in grade with the 10w30?

Is that Sydney AUS?

My answer would be yes and no. I dislike A1-rated 5-30's, but they may be OK if there's no consumption. A3-rated one's are better, but with the same connotation.

Both will work, but I'm sceptical during periods of:
1. temps over 30C
2. heavy load eg. towing, racing, high speed
3. 10k OCI's

It's basically a bare 'minimum' in my books as far as protection.

42 Degrees C??

Man, that's 107+ F. I can't relate to that kind of ambient.

What engine are we talking about and will you be doing hi-speed driving??

Mobil 1 5w30 handled the 100+F temps in Texas with no problems. We ran it in cars, trucks, and vans. Bring on the heat!

What does the owner's manual say to use? And I was under the impression that 5W-30 oils weren't available in Australia as no vehicles are spec'd for it. Oh and yes 107*F is da*m hot

. Even though I use 5W-20 oil year round in NJ I would seriously consider using a 40 or 50 weight oil for those temps.

After I whined for months about not being able to resolve this very problem (5w-30 versus 10w-30), I did finally decided to use 10w-30 because the ambient temp. where I live is high enough and the flash point on 10w-30 is much better than 5w-30 (almost 40 degress F higher in M1).

"Can we use fully synthetic 5w-30 grade engine oil on hot summer days?"

My 2002 Mopar manual shows a high temp cutoff of 100F/38C for 5w-30 (10w-30 is preferred for temps above that), but I presume they're assuming that dino oils will most likely be used.

Viscosity, High Shear (HTHS) from spec sheets:
Citgo 10w-30 (dino): 3.0
Kendall GT-1 10w-30 (dino): 3.1
Pennzoil 10w-30 (dino): 3.2
Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-30: 3.08
Kendall GT-1 Synthetic 5w-30: 3.1

My manual calls for 10w-30 dino oil, which generally have HTHS numbers of 3.0-3.2 per above, for temps above 100F/38C. The more common brands of full-synthetic 5w-30 oils appear to have HTHS in the 3.1 range, so it would appear you've essentially met the manual's 10w-30 protection requirement. Perhaps a more knowledgable oilphile can confirm this.

Mobil 1 5W-30 will do just fine. We have lots of Fords and Hondas running 5W-20 conventional oil here in Las Vegas all year. Temps over 42 C or 107 F are common here during the summer time.

I had ask a similar question to Motul two years ago and their answer was ...15W50.
Anyway, why would you want to push a 5W30 to its limits? Wouldn't it better to have some safety margin?

yes sydney australia.really hot in summer time max i have seen 49c'.Normally 35-42c'
owners manual say 10w-30 to 20w-50 above 0c' and 5w-30 below 0c'
Am sure all these grades are for the petroluem base engine oils, not even dino.
