i WANT TO GET A 30 WEIGHT OIL FOR MY CAR AND I NOTICED THAT THE 5-30 IS THICKER AT 100 DEGREES C THEN THE 10-30.
IF SO THEN THE 5-30 WOULD BE THICKER?

SORRY FOR THE CAPS LOCK

The 10W-30 would have a thicker base oil and for that reason would need fewer/less viscosity improvrs, would shear less than a 5W-30. The 5W-30 would have a thinner base oil but more viscosilty improvers and would have the higher cSt because it is going to shear more.

If I were going to use a 30 grade oil, it would depend upon at what mileage I was going to change oil and the mileage now on the vehicle. If you are going to change oil at 4000 miles or less, I would go with a 5W such as Mobil 1 or Amsoil ASL. More than 4000, the 10W, but the highest 100C cSt synthetic 10W I could find. I would recommend Amsoil ATM.

If you already have 75,000 miles or so, I don't think you can beat the Mobil 1 10W-30 High Mileage.

i have 120 k on my car.
on pennzoil 5-30 it would knock so i switched to 10-40 but now the car is a little sluggish.

i think i should go with a 10-30 now.
all dino so no synthetic for me

You need more information.

The SAE 30 standard covers a relatively broad range of viscosities - from Kv100's of 9.3 all the way to
For example, here's some Kv100 values
Castrol 0W-30 - 12.3
Motul 0W-30 - 11.3
Havoline 0W-30 - 9.4
Shell 5W-30 - 12.2
Mobil 5W-30 - 11.3
Castrol 5W-30 - 9.7
Mobil 10W-30 - 11.8
QS 10W-30 - 10.5
WPP 10W-30 - 9.9

You could try mixing 3 quarts 5W-30 with 1 quart 10W-40 … … to get something in between the 2 viscosities. Might stop the knock (?) and not be as sluggish.

...or how about 2 quarts of 0W-20, 1 quart of 5W-40, 1 quart of 20W-50, a tablespoon of Rachael Ray's All-Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil with just a dash of the 8-Star Balsamic Vinegar of Modena? Not only will it fix your knock, but also your exhaust will smell yummy.

Alternatively, you may want to just buy oil of the correct specification for your car.

i bought some Castrol gtx 10-30.
I adjusted my valves today. Alot less tapping but there is still a distinctive knock coming from what i belive is all the exhaust valves.

95 honda accord, 121k on the clock bought it when it had 115k and did 3 oil changes already and doing one tomorrow after seafoam and then another one because i am only going to go about 500 miles on my Prime Guard oil filter and my 7 mixed oils.

Perhaps you can just try a 5 -30 that is thicker than the one you ran that's noisy? .02.

well its still noisy on 10-40 , 5-30 pennzoil would really knock.
Im giving 10-30 a try and well see. i still have to do a compression test.

Get some GC or maybe something like MaxLife which is at the higher end of the 30 weight realm and see if it is a happy medium.
