5-30 in Fords calling for 5-20,

I don't think it would be any different. Going from a 20 to a 30 is rarely a big deal. Also, you can get a thin-30 at 9.5 KV100 that is very similar to a thick-20 at 9, for example.
 
I use MaxLife 5w30 in my 2001 F150 with the 4.6. It has about 136,000 on it. It uses some oil on long trips, about 1Qt in 2500 miles. It used more before changing to MaxLife. I really like that engine.
