Hello,

A few months ago I purchased a 2006 Honda Civic. I was surprised to see that the owners manual suggested 5-20W oil. I live in Phoenix and it doesn't seem to make since putting 5-20W oil when the temperatures here are well over 100 degrees. Should I go with 5-30W instead, at least in the summer months?

there are many, many more posts about 5w-20 out there. i have only provided links to a few.

anyways.. to answer your question. i would go with 5w-20 even though you live in a warm climate. 5w-20 oils have shown to provide excellent protection in honda motors. the gap between 5w-20 and 5w30 isnt as large as it may seem.

After reading many similar posts to this one brings up a question that kinda makes me wonder if we have enough faith in a certain car to buy it ,why do we wonder about the manufactures recommendations. Like not checking out how hard the car is to service or repair? I have a 2006 4 cyl Toyota p/u the engine is on the 05w20 TSB.

Thanks for the references to the other threads on this subject. I'll review those to prevent an recap on an already exhausted topic. In all my previous cars, the owners manual suggested thicker oils based on operating temperature. This is also the first car I've owned that suggested 5W-20 oil. I was not aware that manufacturers have changed to this weight of oil on the newer cars.

Welcome to the forum! The 5W-20 oils are some of the best on the shelf. You should feel fortunate that your engine was designed for it. If you top-off with 5w30 in the heat of the summer, make sure it is a top quality full synthetic oil.

Ford, Mazda, Honda, Chrysler, and Toyota.

Search, search, search. Did I mention there is a search function? This has been discussed to China and back at least 5-6 times. Use 5W-20 with confidence in your new Honda.
