47RE Pan Drop - concerns?

Pulled the AT pan on my 96 Ram CTD. Was surprised to see a new style filter on there, though apparently they can be interchanged??

Had a look at the bottom of the pan, not terrible, but a decent amount of silver.

Should I be concerned? Rebuild has less than 20k miles.

It really does shift perfectly and drives great. Figured I’d do a pan drop in case there was any rebuild debris in there, plus to adapt to a pump in park approach.

But was surprised to see the dirt, and the filter type that isn’t the same as what I was sold for a 96. @clinebarger do you know if I can interchange the filters if I can source another bolt to fit in the third hole?

The magnet looks normal. The black on the filter looks normal. The brown doesn't look normal but I don't know what it is. I've heard that the filter is interchangeable and flows better. Good move on changing the valve. There are actually two to change.

Yes I’m doing both plus a sonnax accumulator piston and servo.

except right now I can’t get the accumulator piston out.
 
Looks good! You should also consider an aftermarket pan that has a drain plug :)
Sucking a few quarts from the dipstick kind of works. The aftermarket pans are $200+ and with my use I don’t really want more fluid beyond the 4+ gallons in there. It will take too long to warm up imo.

I had considered a $12 DIY drain plug, but I think vacuum works well enough for me :)

There are cheaper pans. Dorman makes a good one and it's nowhere near $200, not even $100 :)

Rock Auto has a couple for $20
 
At stock pressures....That 48RE filter works fine, But you already bought the earlier one so go ahead & used it.

These shed a good amount of debris, You could probably tear it down & find a few things that should have been replaced during the rebuild that weren't.

I had been tempted to buy one, but they all said that they don’t fit the 96 truck. Not sure why...

Now that I’ve dropped the pan and have a good understanding of its shape and size, I may just do that!

Supposedly the older style flows better. It was simple to mount up because one bolt is in the stand-off for the third hole.

Not a great photo, but note the front band adjustment. Seems pretty low given how it’s locked in the nut.

That would tell me that the band is old/worn, and due for replacement, despite it being “rebuilt”...
