I'm concerned about lack of zinc in oil for my 70 Challenger w/ a 500 HP 426 Hemi. ITs got a flat tappet cam w/ Hydraulic lifters. I'm using Valvoline 10/40 now. Should I switch to Delo or Rotella T to get more zinc? WIll bearing clearances be an issue when changing from 10/40 to 5 or 15/40?? I don't want to use additives like EOS or BG MOA,etc. What oil & weight would perform best & be safe for my Hemi? Thanks much for the advice.

Try to find some Brad Penn Penn Grade 1 40 wt. It has 1500 ppm zinc and 1410 ppm phosphorous. It'll protect your cam like nobody's business.

M1 TDT shows a pretty substantial Zinc content (I think in the neighbourhood of 1200ppm) as well as carrying a ridiculous additive package for heavy duty usage.

A quick look at some UOA's of it would show you.

It's readily available at Walmart.

Sounds good but I read in another post that a racer had Penn oil tested & it had sodium in it?? I run Delo in my 02 Cummimns & I felt quite a differnce when an oil change guy put in Castrol instead. Seemed to run smoother with Delo.

It's not the fact that the cam is simply a flat tappet, but it is a flat tappet cam with heavy spring pressure and fast remaps and/or high lifts that require a need for special additives.

Valvoline makes the VR1 Racing Motor oil. They dont have 10W40, but they have 10W30, 20W50, SAE30, SAE40, SAE50, and SAE60. But Rotella is easier to acquire...
Really, 10W40 conventional is a useless grade, IMO, I would use either 10W30, SAE30, 15W40, or SAE40.

Delo 400 will be fine and so will rotella dino or synthetic. My camaro has a 600 lift solid cam with very fast ramps (on the verge of being to fast for a flat tappet cam) and it lives very nicely with the Delo 400. If you want the very best for your vintage Hemi (sweet engine by the way!) you could run the Dominator racing oil from amsoil or the Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil SAE 15W-40 (AME) from amsoil. The way I see it you want the very best possible protection for that Hemi (they are getting hard to come by now days and are very valuable) so spend the extra couple bucks and run Amsoil.

I forgot to ask about switching to synthetic from conventional. My Hemi has about 3K miles on it since a rebuild. Built w/ the good stuff (Diamond, Manley, etc). Hss about 10:1 compresson & hyd flat tappet w/ Landy Rockers. Would synthetic make it prone to leaks & can I switch back to conventional once I've run synthetics?

As long as who ever rebuilt the engine sealed it up good then syn shouldnt cause any leaks. It only has 3K on it so its still pretty new. You can switch back to Dino oil any time you want. There really is no drawback to useing a synthetic.

The Rotella T 5W-40 would be perfect for your engine. It is a highly respected oil on these forums that always produces very low wear numbers in UOA's. It has way more than enough zinc for your flat tappet cam.

Now the big thing I am shocked nobody has asked but WE NEED PICTURES!

Pro Street Camaro, thanks for posting the photos of our Vanishing Point Revisited trip. 1300 miles of hard driving from Denver to Las Vegas proved how reliable the Hemi really is. W/ the 3.73's we cruised between 3500-4000 rpm & the car ran cool as could be. My friend even had the new Chally up to 165.

Last Oct, we were drag racing on the deck of the USS Midway. I'll have to send you a pic. Once in a lifetime opportunities.

(video shows the speedo). Ran Valvoline 10/40 but think I'll switch to either Delo 400, Rotella T or Mobile 1.
