4 New Filters Cut Open

So I was curious about a couple different filters. Had heard good things about the Fram Titanium at AAP so picked up a couple 3614’s. Also grabbed a couple Donaldson P551132’s for the same application due to being a fan of their Synteq media from my power plant days.

Before cutting anything I did the old ADBV “blow” test. Hands down the Fram Ti won that. No matter how hard I tried to blow through the exit port, that thing sealed right up. Worst was the Donaldson. You’ll see why during the pics but the entire inner filter assembly was warped. I’m sure this is what was causing the massive leak by. The Fram Endurance & Amsoil both had what I would call minor leak by. Not a perfect seal but not a drastic amount that I could blow through either.

Also, I apologize for the messy work space & cramped area. I’m working on the Bronco & it’s not mobile right now. It’s pretty much in the way of my bench & storage area so things are starting to pile up as other projects are worked on.

On to the pics & media measurement:

Donaldson:

48 pleats plus the crimp
42.5” long
1.5” width between caps

Fram Ti

47 + crimp
1.7/8” width
54” long

The Fram Ti center section literally fell apart. There was hardly any glue holding the media to the bottom cap and the tube and lower cap even wiggled prior to cutting. Also noticed no more pink OG media or wire backing. This one was 51st day of 2023 construction.

I’ll need to continue in next post

Amsoil:

35 + crimp
1 3/4” width
31 3/4” length

Sloppiest glue by far:

Amsoil vs Fram. Fram on top:

All 4 medias laid out but not stretched. Left to right: Amsoil, Endurance, Donaldson, Titanium:

I’m going to cut the remaining two Ti & Donaldson filters to see if these two were fluke issues. Still have a stockpile of Amsoil & Endurance filters for all of my applications so I’m not changing anything. Figured someone here might want to see these cut open.

Oh, I forgot the precut base plate pics for the Amsoil & Endurance.

Next post.

Great work! thanks for the contributions. And yeah with the Donaldson, if you let your car sit for too long, over 2 nights you may experience a slight dry start for about half second on ignition. The oil light stays on for about 1/2 sec. and instantly disappears. I'm about 9000 miles in so I'm looking forward to what the filter and magnets caught.

Can post more pics on the Donaldson media? Some of your photos are blurred. Does it has multiple layers?

The Titanium, the 2023 batches are disappointing, It was around late 2022 when they cheapened from the pink media. I would've looked in with a flash light before buying one so that you know you got the good ones.

I used my phones light but it wasn’t good enough to see if there was wire backing or not.

Here’s a couple more pictures of the Donaldson media. The secondary layer is nearly as thick as the primary:

Very dense looking texture on the Donaldson, it almost looks as good as the pink media Ultra. The Fram/Amsoil as a more course texture.

The media stack on the Donaldson sample I cut open months ago was about 1/8" tilted to the side. My guess is the center tube gets crushed a bit in the assembly process but the coil spring compensates with a constant positive seal against the ADBV, separating the input and output flow areas.

The Fram/Amsoil primary pleats are softer & slightly thicker than the Donaldson primary layer. The secondary layer on the Amsoil/Fram is FAR thinner than the Donaldson secondary layer. The Donaldson primary does have a smoother or more uniform look to it but to the touch it feels denser and not as soft as the Amsoil/Fram primary layer.

It’s quite the opposite on the secondary layers of both.
