4 days - no power.....living like a mole

I lived without power several times for up to a week or 10 days due to hurricanes when I lived in NC.
Different than here, sweltering heat with no AC or water vs. Cold with no heat.
I have been in various other tasty locales in my life without the benefits of electricty. I can deal, except for the lack of hot showers.

It's weird that you've internet, but no heat.

Yep, here in NC, we have our share of storms also. Hurricanes, and two storms in particular, the great ice storm of 2002, and the storm that dumped 20" of snow that shut down our entire area for several days! We almost always lose our power for at least a week! I am on the end of the grid, a half mile off the main highway, and we are always last to get our power back on. I learned the hard way, ain't nobody gonna take care of you but you!! I have a generator that will "run" the entire household except the heatpump, 2 kerosene heaters, camp stove, a propane cooker, and a charcoal grill. I also make sure I have extra food, fuel for the generator, and if in the winter, fuel for the heaters ahead of any expected storms. We also make sure that our vehicles are full of fuel also. Oh yea, and plenty of bread and TOILET PAPER! If there is a storm predicted in my area, you better get to the store early, folks will buy up all the bread and toilet paper available!
Portable Kerosene heater.
I have a larger one as a backup to my propane heat, which is a backup for my electricity. My ultimate defense is a generator. I am taking no chances on being cold.

Day 7 - We are wearing thin....ate some bad food....shot two looters. Gas holding out. Christmas is near. Saw lights off in distance. May walk for help.
Called useless mayor. Sent nastygram to worthless Governor. No response.
Finally reached a warm body (brain activity debatable) at PSE. They have NO #@$%! CLUE when we will have power.

I know it was a bad storm, but this is a great indicator of just how fragile our grids are. Imagine how a terrorist attack on multiple grids would cripple us. Sorry, Pablo...if you were anywhere near Texas, I'd invite you over for a hot meal and a hot shower.
The grids are fragile and if tree cutting is not allowed we should not be surprised when every peckerpole knocks down a powerpole.
Thanks for the generous offer. Our showers are hot but when you step out into an unheated bathroom the private shrivels.

Sorry to hear about your rough times right now Pabs. I grew up out in the sticks and the most we ever went without power was 7 days. I can empathize with you.
Our 16kW stationary generator was $5000 installed including automatic transfer switch and concrete pad. Most folks should have one IMHO. Usually the power and natural gas doesn't stay out for long. We have an underground 1000-gal propane tank, so we shouldn't ever run out in an extended outage.

So benj - this $5000 gen sounds like a deal. What brand? It's propane? Do you have NG? (I doubt they would allow a below ground propane tank here). Tell me more, please
It is a Generac model 5255 with aluminum enclosure. Our unit is propane but can be bought for NG.

Bummer. I sorta feel your pain.
An ice storm the day after Christmas five or six years ago left us without electricity for six days in below freezing weather.
Fortunately, we had a 6 kilowatt generator, and I can disconnect our panel from the mains and hook up to the generator in about fifteen minutes.

Mayor just called me back - he did not know parts of town did not have power! He said "I'm on it!"....
Man-O-man P.! I had no idea. That is some mess. Just goes to show, you CAN have too many trees..
Latest update - we'll have power on Dec 27th 9:00 PM. Nice.
