Good morning. Its a sunny day in southern Alberta. The 466 MW solar plant near Vulcan, Alberta, the home of Spock, is kicking out at 100% of nameplate. The way the grid manages it is to back off at their gas fired steam generation plants. Interesting that they idle the simple cycle gas fired plants at around 70 MW with a capacity of 984 MW. I've heard this helps with frequency control. As usual the heavy lifting is done with the Cogen plants running at 3.2 GW.

Not very windy today, with an output of 860 MW out of a nameplate capacity of 5.7 GW. Total solar for the Province is 1.5 GW out of a total nameplate of 1.8 GW, and it's ramping as the day progresses. Not bad for a latitude of 50 degrees in southern Alberta.
