I did this 2 years ago and it was even worse----the passages were FULL (in the first photo)this time just the round parts were full....BUT the holes in the intake runners where blocked solid.(between the shiny screw holes)..the result was pinging no matter what fuel or additive was used---cleaned out and now 87 gas is used without pinging....BTW the care has 367K miles.

Wow, that's quite a bit of carbon build up. Any oil consumption? Seems excessive for two years, to say the least. I've seen 250K motors (not Hondas) that had less EGR passage restriction than that.

Maybe if you ran maintenance doses of RX it would prevent/minimize that build up?

Don't ask me how but RX keeps my car from pinging. I have posted it up here before and everyone says it's something else etc.

All I know is the two times I have not put maintenance doses in the pinging started to slowly come back. Then I put 3 oz of RX and the pinging started to slowly go away. For the life of me it does not make any sense. I have theories, but nothing else.

Those passages are only really blocked in a few spots.[and that's enough to stop flow!]
There are deposits all over, but they are not too bad.

you're right, the passages are not fully blocked except where they meet up with the intake runner holes....it was solid there and the holes on the intake were solid carbon. I scraped with a putty knife and wire brush followed by brake cleaner, and on the intake holes I put a shopvac crevice tool near it while I scraped the carbon to suck everything I removed. I also put on aroung 2500 miles per month so 2 yrs is a lot of driving. the first time I cleaned it, the car was about 12 yrs old.
