It seems to me that if the bypass pressure is lower, that won't hurt anything. With that in mind, if you have all that room, yes, the old std Ford filter is the commonly available big one that will screw right on. Motorcraft FL-1A, Fram PH-8A, or equiv. There should be a *very* large increase in filtration area compared to the teacup PH-3614 size, hence less resistance to flow(if all else is equal), thus less pressure differential & need for bypass- in theory!

If someone knows how to cross reference using bypass pressure, there's probably a filter somewhere with the larger dimensions & higher bypass pressure you desire. Unfortunately, I don't know how to find it.

Exactly what car & engine is this for? You could look up a filter for it at wixfilters dot com.

This is a 2.2 Turbo I engine in an '85 Plymouth Caravelle. I do want to take good care of this engine because it was rebuilt a few thousand miles ago and the car only has 77,000 miles on it. It was given to us about a week ago. Btw, I did an oil change and put Mobil 1 5w30 in it because it has the turbo. I've never even bought semi-synthetic, let alone full synthetic.

I went to the Wix website, and their filter for the application is 46120. I then went to Fram's website and this cross-references to PH3559. What was interesting is that the Wix filter has an 8 to 11 psi bypass for this part number. Its dimensions are tiny, however, with a diameter of 3 inches and a height of 3.5 inches (approximately).

Is there a disadvantage to "supersizing?" Why would they recommend such a small filter?

Hey all,

After reading through the previous posts about putting an oversized filter on my engine (2.2 turbo I), I decided on the ST3600 which is about an inch longer and the same diameter as an ST3614. Here's my question. Is there a filter that fits the 15-20 psi bypass and the 3/4 inch threads? I have all kinds of space because I have the Chrysler alternator (it's shorter than the Bosch). I can go about 5 inches in diameter and 8 inches in length. I have also read about the differences in bypass pressure, so the large Ford probably wouldn't work for that reason, right?

if it fits and there are no ground clearance issues only one I know of if it takes longer to fill after an oil change, if you filter is mounted the right way and you can pre-load that takes care of that, you have to buy more oil that may be a disadvantage to some but increased crankcase capacity will allow oil to hold up slightly better between changes

if they can get away with a small filter and it will do the job smaller filters are cheaper for them put on the vehicle (but at the parts store they are all generaly the same $) also less oil has to be put in each engine witch again costs less and also makes the EPA happy, small filters also help with clearance issues like the alternator you speak of, the 4wd version of my truck can only fit a tiny filter because the front drive shaft travels under it, they do not specify different filters for 2wd/4wd so my 2wd truck came with the same tiny filter. will your car actually last longer because of a larger filter? probably not, but it cannot hurt
