Hey guys, I'd like some educated opinions on a few topics related to which oil to use.

The short of it is:
1. I have a 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6 Track model w/ some engine modifications. It makes 294 rwhp right now. It currently has 13K miles on it. I changed the oil w/ conventional oil at 500miles and again at 3500K but I then switched to Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20 which is the recommended viscosity. I'm currently on my second oil change running the Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20.

2. My manual recemmends 5W-20 w/ 7500 mile intervals. I have been using the 7500 mile interval and intend to continue doing it this way. What is interesting is that the 2010 version of the identical engine and car recommended 5w30. I live and drive in Central TX and it has been over 100 degrees for 30-40 days straight.
4. I drive smoothly and reasonably down the freeway for 30 miles to work every day. Very easy drive. No lights or anything. But then I get the car sideways, run it up to redline, and intend to began doing the occasional (2x/ year) track days soon also. The car gets ran up to redline probably 10-15x per day. I'm in sales so the car gets lots of stop and go driving too.
5. See above
6. Car runs great!

I'll be running a full synthetic only. Don't care much about cost (within reason). I'm fine w/ online ordering too.

So my questions are:

1) Is my current oil choice an excellent choice for my application and intervals?

2) Can I switch to the 0W-20 Ultra? What about during the summer? Or just during the winter?

3) Where the heck can I buy Pennzoil Ultra? I have literally called everywhere and no one carries the stuff near me. (I bought it the first 2 changes at WalMart but they discontinued it.)

Thanks so much.

I'm open to recommendations. That's why I'm here.

I have been under the impression that modern Mobil 1 formulations are just not what they use to be and are not of their same former quality. High Iron, etc...

Also, isn't Pennzoil a Shell product?

Really I just want to buy the best commercially available oil I can buy w/o to much trouble. Generally I'm not a fan of boutique oils like Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc...

Also, I'm still eager to know if I can run the 0W-20. I have lots of oil pressure. More than 10 psi per 1K RPM.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I'd use 10w30 considering your climate. I really, really don't trust 5w-20 in an engine that's going to be run hard.

But that's just me.

Suggest: Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20....year-round...with 10,000 +/- OCI (unless under warranty).

Filters: Mobil 1 Extended Performance (if doing the 10K OCI)
Purolator PureOne....for 7500 OCI.

Since you live in Texas cold weather isn't an issue. The weight of oil could be bumped up to a 5W30 especially since you have modded the engine. As far as what oil to use; since your engine uses belt instead of chain for valve timing any brand of oil would be fine. There is far less shearing with a timing belt. If you are asking for opinions I would use Castrol GTX 5W30 @ 4K OCI's. Of course if you are set on synthetics use whatever you wallet agrees with.

I agree that a 30 weight oil would benefit your application. 5W30 or 10W30 would both be better than a 20 Weight.

Does anyone know where I can purchase Pennzoil Ultra?

I disagree w/ going to a 30 Weight because my oil pressure is already quite high. By 5K RPM it's reached the blow off valve pressure at 75psi.

Besides, thinner oils make more power and improve mpg too.

sounds like a neat car.....I'd stick with a synthetic oil....don't be picky on the brands, just choose one, and stick with it. In the beginning, I'd say try a couple different oils out, and change them out accordingly (as needed) per the maintenance schedule; eventually you will find one that you like, your car likes, then stick with it.

I'm a big fan of the QS Ultimate Durability.....but also have used Royal Purple 5w30 with no problems.....though, I believe RP may be "out of the question" - at least in my area, all I've found are "SL" rated oils....being a 2011 vehicle, I bet the manufacturer reqs a "SM" or greater (SN) rated oil.....though I hear RP is working on some oils for the newer API certs.....

You can buy Pennzoil Ultra at most Wal-Mart stores, at least around here.

Your thoughts on 30 weight are precisely correct. The perfect oil for any application is the one that generates 75 psi @ 6000 RPM. So, technically, 5W20 is too viscous for your car as it is. Go with the 5W20 now and drop to 0W20 in the winter.

The industry 20wt oil recommendations are for CAFE reasons .Your operation is really easy on the oil and redlining the engine makes no difference to the oil just so oil is warmed up. What have you done to your engine? In Texas winter a syn 5w-10W-30 would be fine viscosity wise. The 10psi rule is to determine if the bearings are worn it has nothing to do with the viscosity being ok. To track your car why not run a syn 10w30. The more load you put on your engine the higher the wear and the 10w30 would be an advantage as it probably could add to engine durability if pushing the car. The load is on the acceleration. I see you have read oil 101.

I have read oil 101 and the way I understood the implication was that I should run the thinnest oil that I can (for reduced start up wear) that still maintains the needed oil pressure? Is this not correct?

Since mpg & hp is indeed important to me, I'd prefer to go thinner, not thicker viscocity wise. Assuming of course that it causes no excessive engine wear.

All of the Walmarts around here consolidated their oil stock and are now carrying way less product. They no longer carry P-Ultra. For that matter I called every auto parts store for 25 miles, none of them have it. And I can't find it from a single online retailer either.

What is the preferred brand of full synthetic oil in a 0w20 around here? As long as no one sees a problem running that viscocity?

The car just has the usual bolt ons, a program, polished intake ports, etc... Nothing special. Although not the most expensive car I've had, it's by far the nicest and most fun to drive.

Since 5W20 is the recommended grade, you should be able to use 0W20. The most readily available 0W20 are Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Honda and Toyota. You may be able to buy Toyota full synthetic 0W20 for less than $6/qt, call some Toyota dealers around your area to find the lowest price, buying volume may get you some discount.

Just so you know he is a dealer and NOT speaking for Amsoil corporate. It used to be that folks couldn't post links to non-sponsor Amsoil dealer sites. He has his link in that video.

Dan is a pretty good Amsoil rep.

I might try the Amsoil. Or Castrol Edge...

Many years ago I use to race an air/ oil cooled motorcycle and the thing needed between 6-12 vslves (16 total) adjusted w/ every oil change which indicates a lot of wear. That was with Motul synthetic at the time.

Then I switched over to Amsoil and I never had more than 1-3 valves loose again indicating less engine wear.

Since the factory recommends a thicker oil as OK, I'd use the 5-30 in it with your ambient conditions..
Pretty much anybody's is very good now.

You will not see any difference in startup wear with a 5w-20 over a 5w30 especially where you live. Oil 101 is really not to say politely very good.

Dan is a great guy and a honest seller. If you watch many of his youtube videos he praises Mobil 1 and states they are Amsoil's top competitor. I went through him for Amsoil sales and I am now becoming an Amsoil dealer myself.
