2nd pair of Kumhos to wear very quickly...

I had the 4X Ku22 on my GTI and all four had horizontal splits across the treads and I had them replaced with another brand. I contacted Kumho USA with pictures and they wouldn't help me. After that I will not buy another Kumho tire.

Oh boy. I have 4x on my Celica and

[o] I live in the heart of a major metropolitan city
[o] This city is a grid, so many 90 degree angle turns
[o] I have the wannabe go fast 6 speed 2zz variant
[o] I've got 8k on so far

Looks like new tires sooner than expected.

If a tire wear out before mileage warranty you should have prorate the balance.

Last Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring set I bought for E430 the final cost include installation and tax was around $130-140, after rebates. The prorate for Kumho 4X was around $200.

The only thing is the store you bought your tire are cooperate with you in claiming prorate, America's Tire(Discount Tire elsewhere) is very easy to work with in claiming prorate.

You're putting us on, right ??!!

In your original post you mentioned everything except alignment and alignment is most critical.
Air and rotate all you want but if the alignment is off you'll wear tires.
You didn't tell us how the tires were worn or post a pic(s).

What will the excise be when the 3rd set wears out ~18k ?

Huh? I'm lost.

The first set of Kumho 4X tires got me around 18k before they were wore down pretty low. I mentioned the balance, rotation and air as I figured that would be questioned as a reason for the low life.

This set of tires, the Kumho PA31, have about 11k on them and when I took them in for a balance/rotation, was told they were down to 7/32 and 6/32.

Since someone mentioned the alignment here, I decided to test it out on a flat road and it stayed straight. I mentioned it because the alignment was in question.

After seeing the replies and similar experiences, it just appears its the just a quick wearing tire matched with her rough commute. Needless to say, I won't be going with another Kumho set and will look for something less performance oriented.

And what exactly did the fact that it stayed straight prove?

+1 I have to agree with him. Even though the car isn't pulling doesn't mean that the alignment might not be off. I would bring it in for a check anyways to be on the safe side.

I agree about the alignment might be off. I had a 96 Silverado and it drove fine and didn't pull, but it nearly ruined a set of new tires because the alignment was so far off.

I remember driving my old VW Golf which would drive true with no hands on the wheel even through it was considerably out of spec in terms of alignment. That's not much of a test for alignment in some vehicles.

If the PA31's are at 6/32nds and 7/32nds at 11K miles, what are you expecting to get out of them?? ...and is that result linear in the sense that at 22K miles you'll have 3/32nds?? How much of that result at 11K miles is something that hasn't been checked or checked by taking your hands off the wheel?? Not saying it isn't a fast wearing tire but it seems they've been balanced but the rest isn't clear.

Well, you learn something every day. I always thought if it drove straight and didn't pull, your alignment was OK. I'll have it checked next time I have some free time and def before my next set of tires.

Looked up my model of civic and found this:

"The Sixth Generation Civic has a wishbone strut front suspension. Only front Toe adjustablility is provided from the factory, however, aftermarket adjustment methods for Camber and Caster are likely available. The rear independent strut suspension is OE adjustable for Toe only. The recommended alignment type is FOUR WHEEL Wheel alignment specs with adjustment illustrations are available for all Civic models HERE"

The Ecsta 4x is a 40k tire according to the manufacturer which in tire terms is pretty short. The General RT43 T rated version is rated for 75k miles and the H rated as mentioned earlier is 65k miles. They are very slow wearing on the Camry after 10k miles most of which are city miles.

Are we to assume then that American made tires won't wear quickly if they're significantly out of spec in terms of alignment?? I would think that would depend on the individual tire and compound in relation to the vehicle and driving style if everything is correct.

The only set of tires I've owned that didn't last 25K miles were US-made Goodyears. I'm all for buying American when possible but I'm not sold on U.S. made tires as being particularly noteworthy.

On my second set of Kuhmo KR21 on a Honda. First lasted 30,000. Lucky to get that on this set. America's Tire was great about pro-rating etc. but you still lose out. 30,000 miles on a 85,000 mile rated tire? Yikes
