Hankook Kinergy PT Review

I have Hankook Kinergy ST tires on 2 vehicles. The mazda and elantra. The elantra has 20k on them and they are worn, the rears have 4/32 the fronts 6/32.

They have been rotated regularly and tire pressure maintained. They are worn very evenly.

I think i will get 10k more miles out of them and they will be done. The rears will not go back on the fronts, when the fronts hit 4/32. I'm replacing them.

I do drive a bit harder in the corners than some people, but these tires will hardly make it to 1/2 of the 70k warranty.

I don't know how Discount tire handles warranties. If i get a pro-rated amount, is that only toward more Hankook tires?

If so, i'll just eat it and put on continental true contacts next.

Funny enough I had Continental TrueContact Tour on my Mazda3, good tire, a bit softer than the Hankook PT, but couldn't balance two of them, decided to get rid of it while I could exchange them and got my last set of Michelin Defender T+H, which I replaced with the Hankook's. I already have 6000 km on them, no sign of wear, very well balanced with little weight. I can't complain really.

Got them on my Saturn AWD. Got maybe 35K miles on them and they about to be replaced. Worn evenly. May buy them again. I’m OK with the wear I got from them. I usually replace at 30K or so just because new tires look much better/safer, especially with winter on the way.

I recently purchased a set of 4 of these tires at my local Walmart. I'm very satisfied. They have a 90,000 mile treadware warranty from Hankook. I looked in Consumer Reports magazine. They thoroughly tested this tire on their test track in Texas and estimated it's tread life to be 85,000 (which is very close to the manufacturer's warranty).

I'm so tired of buying tires like Continental that only last 40,000 miles despite being marketed as having a much longer life.
I don't want to participate in the planned obsolescence strategy of tire makers wanting you to buy more sets of tires so they can
increase their profits at your expense.

You'll never get any tire to last 85K on an Odyssey with mixed driving.

Maybe so, but the Hankook 90,000 mile warranty tires should last longer on the Odyssey than any other tire, so at least I'll save money on the decision to go with Hankook.

We have had two sets of Hankook tires since about 2020. Both sets had to be replaced due to the very same thing. The tires all started to have these (looked about 3" diameter) bubbles develop in the sidewalls. They also both seemed to be eating up the treads mighty fast for us not putting lots of miles on our vehciles. I doubt if we even put 10,000 miles on either set. The tire shop / dealers could offer us no help, no recall and no advice or reason this could happen on two different cars. About the only thing they did say was "yeah, we been replacing lots of these lately." Replaced both sets with Goodyears.

yup, had michelin and bidgestones mostly all my life, gave it a shot with Hankooks, can't complain, even if I get half the wear claimed, still got my money worth over a set of Defender2.

When I buy tires, the most important criteria for me is how long will they last (in terms of miles).
I don't want to pay $600+ for a set of 4 tires that are only going to last 40,000 miles.

I always try to avoid anything where I see planned obsolescence, where a company is capable of making a tire that lasts 80,.000 or 90,000 miles, but doesn't because they want you to buy 2 sets of tires from them instead of 1 set.

Yes I'm one of the Rarities out here because I change my tires on cars at about $40,000 miles whatever is half life. I like a nice cushy soft quiet ride I'm thinking of trying the Hankook Tire with the acoustic noise reduction inside or the Michelin on my next set of tires.

I even change my bicycle tires when they start to show a flat Edge from putting too many miles on them.. I'd rather change them then have to repair a flat on the side of the road.

I change my oil in my engine frequently just because I like to do it! I enjoy the smell of new Rubber and fresh oil.

Hi guys,

I decided to share my experience so far with my new Hankook Kinergy PT tires, in size 205/60/16 H, on my 2018 Mazda 3 GS sedan.

My dad and I always preferred Michelin and Bridgestone's tires, as well as Yokohama's. We both had Michelin Harmony, Michelin Primacy MXV4, Michelin Defender, Michelin Defender T+H, Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus, General Altimax RT43, Bridgestone Quiettrack and one set of Continental's True Contact Tour which my dad returned because two of them could not get balanced properly. So, we have good experience with quality tires for many years.

That being said, I was looking at the Defender2, Yokohama Avid Ascend LX, Continental PureContact LS, Cooper Endeavor, General Altimax RT45, Pirelli P7 All Season Plus II, and the Toyo Extensa A/S II.

I was looking for a good all around, long lasting tire, quiet and good riding tire, with some good handling around corners.

My last set of tires was the Michelin Defender T+H. They lasted around 85 000 km (close to wear bar, but I never go to that point). These Defenders were quiet on smooth surfaces, louder on rough pavement, like most tires in that category would be. My only downside to the Defenders is that they were very firm, I always ran them 2-3 PSI less than the recommended pressure in the door sticker (mine is 36 PSI, so ran them at 32-33).

As the Michelin's were pretty worn out, they were very hard and noisy, which is normal, still had good grip on dry, but it was time to change, even though I think I could've run that set for the summer.

Now, what caught my attention on these Hankook's Kinergy PT is the treadwear, rated at 860, higher than both Defender2 and Bridgestone Quiettrack. I got curious and did a bit of research for reviews. I never had Hankook tires before, it's a first for me.

Here in Canada, we have Point-S retail stores, they offered a promotion for Hankook's, free installation plus 100$ mail rebate from Hankook.

The total installed on my car tax included, with all the rebates, was 560$ CAD. Both Michelin's and Bridgestone's were over 1000$ CAD. For this price, I decided to give it a shot, Hankook gives a 30 days trial, I am not sure how true this is, but I bought them anyways.

So far, I drove around 900-1000 km's on them, they can handle 51 PSI max pressure, I can run them at 36 PSI like recommended by Mazda with no problem, they are not as hard as the Michelin's. They are very quiet, a bit more than the Defender's, but equal or comparable to the Quiettrack. They have a bit softer sidewall than both Defender's and Quiettrack.

Where this tire shines, is the grip, both dry and wet. They don't squeal, at all, even if I push them through corners hard (the temperature is not hot enough though, will see during very hot summer days). In wet, they cut through water very well, almost no hydroplaning, very minimal and the grip is very impressive for a tire at this price.

At higher speed, around 80 mph and higher, they are surprisingly stable and predictable, well planted. They don't vibrate at all and needed very little weights while balancing. I have to mention, this is not a soft tire, sidewall is softer than the other two, but it's still firm.

Overall, I am very impressed by this tire, made in U.S.A was one of the reasons I bought them, the treadwear, quietness, good riding, and the surprising grip they offer in both wet and dry. Lastly, the price. I find tires are getting so expensive, plus I only have regular size 16 tire. To me, this was a very good deal and worth trying, and to my surprise, I am not disappointed, even impressed.

If you guys have any experience to share with Hankook's, I would love to hear them!

After 10k miles with Hankook Kinergy PTs, I can say: poor wet and dry traction and braking. I would not purchase again.

I have a set of Hankooks that I bought at Sam's club for my 1990 Ranger. They have been great so far and they have been on it for over a year and they show almost no wear. They are so grippy that you really can't tell if the road is wet. Those 14 inch tires are hard to find but at least somebody makes them. Another Ranger followed me home one day because he wanted to know where I found those tires.

I have the Kinergy GT, which is a (probably) cheaper version used as OE on Hondas, with only 500 treadwear rating.

The tire is good, happy with the wet performance, but the noise is definitely above average.

I have approximately 90,000 km on them and they still not at the minimums. My car seems to be easy on tires though.

I have 3 Nissans and all 3 came with Hankook kinergys. My 18 rogue and 21 Altima were OK up till about 30k and they were shot. Granted they were oem, but they were made in the USA. My wife’s 24 Altima came with them and they were just god awful, those were made in Korea. They were so loud that the dealer replaced both front wheel bearings because rotating front to back changed nothing, and the dealer wouldn’t listen to me that I was sure it was the tires. At 1k on a brand new car I went to the local tire shop and had Continental pure contacts installed and problem solved. The dealer covered half the cost at least. I’m trying to work a deal on a new truck and the standoff right now is replacing the Hankooks it’s setting on.

Blame the car manufacturer for any shortcomings with OEM tires.. they are spec'ed by them.

I don’t disagree. Just pointing out how they were on what I’ve had them on. My 09 Altima came with continentals from the factory and were some of the best tires I’ve ever owned. Because of that experience I favor continental. Same goes for my non preference of Hankook.

I have had several sets of Hankooks although not the Kinergy PT version. Last set was the Kinergy GT and while I had 0 problems with the way they rode or drove they didn't hole up to the heavier Odyssey and I did get them warrantied. In general, I have always had good luck with them and the old Optimo H727 (100k) were the only tires I have had that lasted more than 60k on our Odyssey, the first set actually went 80k before wife cut one on the road.

For the poster asking about DT warranty, Once the tires get to 4/32 they will look at warranty for mileage if they are worn evenly without obvious mechanical issues. I have warrantied a couple sets of tires there and I could choose whatever I wanted didn't have to go back with the same brand. I don't know if that store specific or general policy for the company though.
