First pair (Kumho 4X) were put on not too long ago and wore down to below 4/32 in less than 18k. This was with me keeping them properly inflated, balanced and rotated (the few times I could during their short lives).

Replaced them with Kumho PA31s on now and with approx. 11k on them I was told they were down to 7/32 & 6/32 tread on them. Doesn't that sound rather quick? Again, properly inflated to 33-35 and balanced.

These are on my 1999 Honda Civic which my GF drives 90% of the time. Her commute is about 40 miles round-trip on surface streets. She doesn't drive with a lead foot, brake hard or corner hard. Could it just be the stop & go is killing the tires and I need to go with something with a harder compound?

Stop and go is very hard on tire and brake.

The Kumho 4X on the rear of my S2000 only lasted about 9k miles, the front looks like will be about 15-16k miles.

City driving kills tires. What are the speed rating of these tires? I did a quick google search and the first hit was that they are V speed rated which is way too high for a 4cyl Honda Civic. Try a T speed rated tire. I still wouldn't expect more than 30k out of tires which are driven in the city.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Thanks for your experience with the 4Xs, makes me feel better that it wasn't just me that got terrible longevity from them.

And yes, the current ones are V-rated.

Unfortunately her commute, especially with her schedule, she's in traffic both directions. Different class tires it is, next time!

I have a pair of Kumho Sense on the back of my Olds that I put on last August, and they still look new. Probably be a lot different if they were on the front. Anyway, I have no regrets buying them, and for now I think they will give good service.

The factory Kumhos on my former 2001 Kia Rio lasted about 70k miles. Battery lasted 11years until i got weak knees. Amazing stuff. That car was the best alligned from factory new that i have ever owned. For $11k with automatic bought in February.... It was a great deal. That was when Kias came with a fairly offensive smelling anti ocean voyage corrosion spray.

I've had 3 sets of Kumhos-the KH16s I had on the xB didn't last 20K, the Road Venture A/Ts on my company van wouldn't stay balanced & were gone in 30K, and the super cheap Power Star 758s on my old 300D lasted until they dry rotted, well over 40K. Go figure!

When was the last time the vehicle was checked for proper alignment and have the suspension parts been checked for wear? Sounds like she has some worn parts or the alignment has gone out.

There's a certain definition of insanity.....

Got a set of Kumho Sense tires on my mother's 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It's driven 40% city and 60% highway. 11k miles and they almost look like slicks now.. Kinda glad to know that I am not alone with such an experience from Kumho tires. Michelin, Bridgestone, and Cooper CS4s all lasted me 50k-70k each. Bridgestone lasted the longest, but it was the noisiest one though. And Coopers are amazing in snow for an all season tire! Many winter tires should take notes from Coopers. And Michelin is good highway cruiser tire. Just my experiences

I had great wear out of Pirelli P4 series tires in the past. Driving style was very similar. they seemed to last forever and were reasonably priced.

California is full of curvy roads, and that kills tires.

Also, you should have chosen a different tire for the 2nd go around if the first wore out that quickly.

Buy a tire with a long tread life warranty like the General Altimax RT43 (65k miles) and America's Tire will pro-rate the tire life, so if they lasted 20k miles, you'd get 60% off your next set.

Phoenix is all straight roads, and my General Altimax RT43s on my Camry have 12k miles and 5-1/2 months on them and they still look like new.

Well I'm def done with Kumho and this category of tire. These tires were $50 less per tire than other Michelins I was looking at and I see why now. I went with the current Kumhos as they had a higher treadwear rating but the outcome has been about the same.

The alignment on the car is straight. Took it on a recently paved road and it remained straight for a good while (8+ seconds).

I'll just tell my GF that it's her commute thats killing my tires.

Sorry to hear the disappointment, but my experience mirrors yours.

My Kumhos wore out so fast I could hardly believe it. And their traction wore out just as quickly. Not worth my hard earned money!

The KR21's on the Escape have around 35k on them currently. Looks like they have another 10-15k left. The tires are around 5 years old so they meet my expectations. Won't go them again since had to order them. Only will go with tires I get off the rack from these on.

Alot of factors in tire wear, driver to the vehicle.

You're putting us on, right ??!!

In your original post you mentioned everything except alignment and alignment is most critical.
Air and rotate all you want but if the alignment is off you'll wear tires.
You didn't tell us how the tires were worn or post a pic(s).

What will the excise be when the 3rd set wears out ~18k ?

The PA31 is Chinese. Both it, and the 4X, are high performance tires that don't last very long. 25k tread life is about right for a high performance all-season.

The TA71 would most likely last longer.

Falken has the same problem. Great performance, but short life!
