$22500 To Replace Sunroof On 2020 Camry

...
God forbid that the paycheck - to - paycheck living American (or Canadian) buy a car without a sunroof or entertainment screen.
Once again - doubling down on a false premise doesn't righten it.

It's OK to feel zero sympathy for someone who has issues with something you consider superfluous, but boasting about it only means that you consider yourself the authority on what's needed and what is not.

Because what you have and can't live without is totally superfluous to billions below you. I grew up in a country where others were deciding what we needed and what we didn't - didn't end well.

I have one car with no sunroof whatsoever and three with Panos. It's a no brainer. I feel claustrophobic in the tin can. Physically.

Besides the pano looking beautifully and bringing in light and views when I want them in - it calmed down the kids on trips when they were growing up, it allowed me to show Manhattan the right way to my visiting friends, and all in all - it has paid for itself several times over.

Not to mention that it's an extra egress point in an emergency/accident.

I'm very much ok with you not needing one, but that you'd be chastising the ones who consider needing it in all yor rightfulness is scoff material.

Modern vehicles seem to be designed with little to no attention paid to replacement costs. Panoramic roofing is one example. LED headlight modules are another.

Yes, an LED highlight is often brighter and lets you see better (I'll not litigate the glare topic here). But is the LED so much better than it's worth having to replace $5000 worth of headlight when you hit a deer instead of buying $100 worth of bulbs?

I mostly agree.
Note that the $8k headlights (a pop) are usually the Germans' "laser" ones. Not sure if they are led based. I think not 100%, because they are being phased out for cost reasons, and because of the US regulations not allowing them to be used to full benefit.

They are actually expensive to manufacture. LEDs are replacing them.

That is kind of crazy that Toyota Canada just went along with that price...
It would be interesting to see what would be done if it was covered under warranty, somehow I don't think it's going to cost nearly as much... Or do they write off the car.... Lol

I have a base model truck with no extras - not even power windows or remote start. My nineteen year old truck just keeps going and will not quit. I have had a few minor issues but nothing major. Couple of wheel bearings, the ignition module and the plastic clutch master cylinder mount breaking.

I have no desire for a sunroof. I work often enough outdoors in the hot sun and in sub freezing temperatures. Also ride my motorcycle and I get all the exposure to the great outdoors that I could possibly want. I have no desire for a sunroof.

There are lots of complaints about the high cost of car repair and part of the blame falls on the consumer for wanting all these extras. Manufacturers would not be supplying them if there was no demand for them.

A usual sunroof was not good enough, the Camry owner had to have a panaromic one. I have zero sympathy for him.

I recently saw an ad for the Toyota Sienna and was shocked at the Cdn $90,000+ price.

He's being hosed. I've seen insane quotes on various vehicles but something doesn't add up. A couple of Toyota dealerships show four different part numbers for the entire panoramic roof assembly at $5867.80. A couple of places show the frame listing from $380-$1100 plus $1900 for the glass. I smell a rat. But even buying it yourself the parts are insane in a couple of years a 2020 Camry won't be worth 22k.

I never cared for the coconut burner in my yukon but thankfully it's been 100% trouble free in all its 20 year and 343k life but the big moon roof in my escalade is a concern especially with modern gm quality. I wish neither had them. Don't like having light come down from up top in any vehicle so I never retract them. Dislike like having them open making wind noise even more. Whole thing is flat out stupid to me, who even asked for this nonsensical crap anyway? Who brainwashed the masses into thinking this junk feature is a "luxury" and worth paying for? Even if i had to pay several hundreds to not have them i'd pay so i'd never have to worry about them shattering or leaking.

Well, the article says the dealership gave the option to condemn it shut and disable it for south of $600, which they did.

So if rolling the roof closed and pulling a connector out is $600, it speaks for how the rest of the pricing is set.

But - never let facts get in the way of a good story.

That's ridiculous. I have a moon roof in my CRV, but it came standard with the thing. I never opened it, and never will. If it leaks one day, just gonna run an ugly bead of black RTV right around the whole thing. But so far, so good. 12 yrs and no leaks.

I have been looking at cheap old cars recently and I actually saw a 4 runner with a bead of RTV.
