2026 JD Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study Results

Pay to play always gets better ratings in my opinion. Pause and contemplate who buys and drives Buicks. Old people mostly (like my age 68). They don’t really need or use anything technical in their vehicle. It just needs to get them to the grocery store, doctors office, and pickle ball court. They don’t report technical problems. They aren’t using the technology.

I find it interesting that Buick is so close to the top, with VW so close to the bottom (practically tied with Volvo).

VW was at the very bottom in last year's results as well. Nothing interesting about it except for the consistency.

I have owned VW's since I was 17 and still do at 78. For me they have been very reliable since I don't just buy and drive. I follow their maintenance schedule. Works for me. My vans I have driven all over America and I do carry spares like belts and electrical parts but have never been stranded. I still own 4 and they are ready to go all the time.

It was a big issue the coolant tanks leaking I did replace mine. Mine was originally my Fathers and he bought it in 2018 for 11k out the door. Brand new LS with the 5 speed manual for 11k! That's crazy cheap for a brand new car in the last 20 years. Anyhow Its still kicking and I bet it'll last me another 10 years before it blows up or something. I think the rust will be what takes out in the end those 5 speeds last a long time.

Remember the phrase "Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" and Sparks aren't so bad. Maybe. I'm also heavily bias as there my favorite kind of car.

I totally get it, I'm a HUGE Bolt fan and they're definitely "cheap and cheerful"... just not slow. Just because a car is slow doesn't mean it's bad haha, just that it's bad for me :)

At least GM has brought back the bolt. For now who knows. I think the Spark should come back as a budget EV < 20k but I know I'm dreaming. Bet it could be a fast hot hatch as an EV. Be so much fun.

If the Spark came back. I'd be first in line to buy one.

I don't think a new car for $11K will ever be a thing about but if you have $15K to spend on a car I don't think you can do any better than a used Bolt.

This one would be my pick, you can add Comma Four for $1000 and even have Autopilot on your Bolt (it's supported on 22-23 EUVs w/Premier w/o Supercruise).

When I look at new vehicles either to buy or just looking, they all look great. IDK what brand it is. Even when test driving them back to back, the all feel very close. Nice tight panel gaps, good paint quality, interior fit & finish, tight ride & handling. We won’t know how a new vehicle will be until we get it in our driveway and have it for a while.

When I’ve purchased new vehicles, I have often(coincidentally) selected the ones with lower ratings because they fit my criteria better and I liked driving them better. For example, I have had 3 NISSAN ALTIMAS. I like driving them better(day in, day out) than other cars in their segment and they’ve been quite good for me, especially the CVTs. And funny too is my wife loved driving them. It’s too bad their reputation is so poor. I don’t think they’re getting a bad rap, I think they get what they deserve. But I personally had great success with’em!

"Of the top five industry problems, four are directly related to owner integration of mobile phones to their vehicles"

Shouldn't we, like, have a dependability study that only counts actual problems?
We have invented more first world problems when the biggest whine is when our mobile communication device doesn't interact well with our transportation device. If a car/truck gets me home from my trip without being towed, that was a reliable trip.

Does anyone else think that a dependability survey of current model year cars might be a bit premature?
Maybe more useful, if less lucrative, for a survey provider to wait a few years to establish meaningful trends for each manufacturer.
In any event, I don't think that the provider in this case has a whole lot of credibility left anyway.

Agree and that would really separate the wheat from the chaff. I think the best we can do is an entity in Europe who performs a breakdown of vehicles at 100km.

There is no way that Ram should be anywhere near Honda and Mazda. It should be down there with Jeep.

Huh.... No Chrysler or Dodge listed here...? Not enough sales?

The more tech, the lower the score is my takeaway. As mentioned above, the older the new owner, the less likely they care to pair anything to this new transportation tool...'oh, grandma, I can pair your phone to let you make calls while driving!' 'that sounds distracting, I'll just make a call from the parking lot, sweetie'
