2024 Totals: "Post your latest oil change"

...Also in 2025, can we ask users to post whether if it is GF-7? This will determine how many early adopters there are and the number of die-hard users reaching into their stash.

I am pretty sure most BITOG users have an oil stash.
Running a GDI motor, I'm planning on using GF-7 as soon it becomes available at my Kia dealer or at the indie garage that I use for oil changes.

Regarding oil stashes: My last five cars did not use a drop of oil during their tenure, so every now and then a never-opened bottle of old oil turns up in my stash of automotive lubricants. Most recently, a 2011-vintage bottle of GF-5 M1 5W30 resurfaced...and, somewhere, there's a bottle of Total "Turbo Formula" 20W50, purchased around 1990, back when there were Total gas stations here in Michigan. It's probably next to the bottles of Type F tranny fluid that'll never get used.

Was surprised that the only OEM oils to make the list were AC Delco, Motorcraft, and Toyota. Honda lubricants do get mentioned on here from time to time, but didn't make the cut for whatever reason.

Throughout the year, I bet many Frankenbrews go unreported.
This is not to disparage the findings, just a guess.

Ha-ha,,,think of all the certs Frankenbrews might have!
More like think about how many oils have been ruined by mixing their chemistries with other oils 🤦‍♂️
I get it that sometimes you need to mix to use up old oils but we have a few members here who mix on purpose because they think they know better than the experts who built the oils 🙄 And in the end they are really not achieving anything at all.

I think it’s more about being a cheapo and thinking you have to use up everything. You cannot just recycle that quart of oil you picked up for 30 cents 10 years ago - that would be ridiculous.

Is that a certainty? I've read it here but can't recall the proof or even specific, known clashers.
I'd bet there are plenty of basic oils which would mix without bad results.
I’m not saying that the oils will ruin the engine but if you are expecting the oils to still pass the same approvals then that’s unlikely.

It’s just silly to think that the average person with no experience in the industry can play backyard chemist and actually make an even better oil. It’s not happening

We have no idea how mixing affects the resultant oils performance other than some tests showing very low temperature degradation with the particular oils tested. I can guess, give my opinion and assume. But no one truly knows.

Warren Oil makes a strong showing in 5th place: Super Tech + Kirkland = 119 total.

Around 1982 GM became more heavily involved in 5w30 factory-fills. Leery at first, I started blending it with my 10w30 / 10w40. Then I began blending multiple oil producers brand names. Then into the 1990s and 2000s, my backyard chemistry evolved into experiments using 5w20, 0w20, 10w40, 15w40......etc.

No damaging effects for over 43 years now. My resultant frankenblends performed marvelously and still do to this day. My latest batch was blending HPL Performance Plus 5w30 with HPL No VII 10w30. The board-broadcasted Ester base from one and the board-broadcasted PAO from the other, have gotten along great so far. If there's an Additives Clash going on, I'm not seeing or hearing any evidence.

Life is good under my wife's Kia 2.0 MPI hood using HPL. Keeping the OCIs short since 1970, keeps me and my engines happy. Been doing similar with my Hyundai 2.4. Clean and quiet as a church mouse.... so that engine looks and says.

I’m no tribologist but everything I’ve read about formulating an oil is a balancing act. A little of this improves X but hurts Y. To much of a good thing or not enough is bad. One can not tell what affect mixing oils will do to overall performance.
