Son’s car (2022 Maverkick hybrid) is due for an oil change. I’m going to do it this time. From what I read, they’re not hard on oil so not overly concerned. Still, what would y’all recommend? FWIW, almost exclusively short tripped in town with little accumulated mileage.

I have a 22 Hybrid Maverick but I do make sure I get it fully hot each week. Oil changes I do them every year or 5,000 miles, my Maverick with the OLM wants you to change it annually regardless of mileage. I use 0w-20 Mobil 1 purchase from Walmart.

‘22 Maverick Hybrid Lariat here. My experience: Initially, I started out using using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W20. Previous car with the same 2.5L Hybrid engine was a Ford Fusion Hybrid. I put 210,000 miles on it with the same oil. A good option.

Fast forward to now: Over the counter oil preference is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum because A) It runs a bit quieter & smoother than Mobil 1 and B) The apparent PAO content of the current EP Mobil 1 has been reduced from 50+ % to below 25%. Budget cuts?

If you really want to splurge and pay more, anything from HPL is a step above these Mobil 1 and Pennzoil options. HPL No VII 5W20 is a great choice.

Great truck and engine combo. Getting 40-50 mpg in a a truck makes it easier to absorb $4.50 gas costs. Happy driving!

But by switching to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum now you have an oil with 0% PAO. At least with EP you get 25% PAO and 75% GTL instead of just 100% GTL (although lately because of the wording on the labels we’re not exactly sure if Pennzoil is still actually using that much GTL)

Any oil that meets the Ford spec, and just change it more frequently to get ahead of any fuel dilution or moisture build up. I like Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for the GTL base and top shelf additive package. Mobil and Valvoline have some hybrid specific blends that could be worth researching a bit more.
See what the oil life monitor says with your short trips. I wouldn't change it any earlier than 4K miles though unless the monitor tells you to.

Isn’t the only shell GTL plant down because nothing is happening in the Middle East?

Perhaps. What that PAO reduction tells me, is that there is more parity now between the two flagship motor oils. Flip a coin now between the two choices. You can no longer get a majority PAO, over the retail counter choice now. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 is no longer a “pound the table” bargain for what’s in it now. Even though Mobil increased their mileage rating for Extended Protection from 20,000 to 25,000 miles, is the formulation really upgraded? In fact, almost ALL their previous rated 10,000 mile oils are now 15,000 miles. 15,000 miles now 20,000 miles. Smells like more of a marketing change than a formulation change.

As someone else stated, I would be willing to bet, the GTL in Pennzoil products we are buying on the shelf today, was made long before that plant incident occurred. By the end of the end of the year, afterwards.

If you want more PAO in a Mobil 1 product, run Mobil 1 Advanced Clean or Mobil 1 Euro Car 0W-40. It's GTL and PAO. Or Castrol Euro 0W-30.
