Just purchased a 2021 Ecodiesel and am hearing all kinds of opinions about oil. Dealer says Rotella T6 and Ram says no! They want a Euro oil and can not find anything but pitches for their brands. Can someone give me some honest input of what I should do? Triax has one and they are in Dallas but I do not know what to do? With the price of the truck, I want to do the right thing. Gen 3 engines have a different spec than Gen 2. I really do not want to hear pitches but actual facts.

Took a while to make the first post but better late than never. Qs euro 5w-40 had that spec and was a great oil at a great price but looks to have been discontinued recently maybe because the $23 price tag couldn't be sustained but I wish they kept it around and raised it by a buck or two. It's been mentioned that it's close enough to PP 5w-40 which has it too but isn't easy to get. Ms-12991 is noted as being a copy of mercedes 229.5 and that wouldn't surprise me.

QS/PP 5w-40 aren't anything special. Any other euro 40 will be fine since all of them are dual rated for gas and diesel engines through the oem licenses and that's all there is to it. Other brands don't care to spend the money licensing that spec that isn't that common, they'll license specs that they see worth the cost. Change the oil very frequently in these ecodiesels as in no more than 5k.

I believe that is the same as my friend's Grand Cherokee.
Due to engine problems, the viscosity recommendation was upped to Rotella T6 5w40 or 15w40 I believe. Original was 5w30... Pretty sure there was a service bulletin.
I used to service it; lemme check what I have out in the garage.

Is there any factory extended warranty or powertrain warranty left on the truck?
Could be a factor in what you may want to run in it.

That engine is a crapshoot. You can run it on a HDEO and it might blow.. blame the oil
or you could run it on the recommended oil and have the same happen
we see how good the recommendations were for the earlier engines.

Castrol 5w40 euro is available at walmart for 24$/5qt
and says "meets engine test requirements of ms-12991

QS Euro 5w-40 was back on walmart.com Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but gone again this morning. Not sure what is up with that...very strange. Probably see it back again. During those three days, Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30 was also available, but now "out of stock" as well.

The actual fact is this - open the owners manual. Find the manufacturer specification. Choose an oil that meets that specification.

Done.
That's not the actual fact that's something a lawyer approved. I had the original ecodiesel and the spec was so crap it kept throwing main bearings causing huge issues. After years of $20+ k engine problems they finally came out and said to just run Rotella T6. There's a reason recalls go through actuaries first where they calculate if their error is worth admitting.

To OP. Run something with LL04 approval. It's a BMW spec for their diesel and it will handle everything you're looking for. Look at FCP Euro and grab some Liqui Moly for it. It's a very good oil. Most here won't admit it but if it had a different name and price tag they'd champion it. If you take advantage of their program just grab it and be good. I had the 3.0l ecodiesel then the 3.0l Lion that was in my Land Rover. They loved T6. The only thing they didn't like was what you found when you "Open the owners manual. Find the manufacturer specification. Chose an oil that meets that specification." then actually used it. They were wrong and in the end had to change the spec. Stick with a LL04 spec oil and you'll be fine.

Might not be helpful, but took care of my buddies Jeep W/eco diesel for 2 years, ran Motul 5w40 Gen2 in it with no issues about 30K miles...Gen 1 motor though

If you are keeping it longer or plan for it, forget A3 or anything that is LL01, MB229.5.
Go C3 but heavy C3 like Mobil1 ESP 0W40 X4 or Motul X-Clean 5W40 GEN2. The reason is DPF.
You could go HDDO like Delvac 5W40 which is compatible with DPF.

It's a diesel LL01 wouldn't be what you'd go for, right? LL04 or bust?

I get that. I guess the point of my post was LL01 has never been recommended for any diesel. It's always been LL04. The equivalent of saying not to use 2 stroke oil in it. :-)
LL01 oils are usually dual rated ACEA B4 (light diesel) and some are API CF. But only for diesels without emissions equipment.
PPE 5W40 that FCA recommended for this engine is B4, CF. But they sacrificed longevity of DPF for short term band aid.

Plenty of Euros run high SAPS oils with DPFs. Volvo has used A5/B5 oils with DPF for years, so has Ford in Europe. DPFs survive just fine in those.

Many of those are going to be "Recommended For", not actually carrying the material specification FCA called for. TRIAX for example, and Millers.
