2020 Ranger XL Towing Numbers

Congrats. I was in a similar situation last year when I purchased my truck - had a $30k budget, but ultimately stretched it a bit to buy the truck in my signature.

Honestly, I commend you for sticking to your needs and not giving into peer pressure. Your truck is the probably the truck that I should have purchased and is all the truck that I need.

Nice truck, congrats. In for daylight pictures.

I was playing around with the build and price on a Ranger Tremor and a F150 FX4 (Tremor isn't up on B&P yet for the F150) 21 F150 really climbed in price. It seems you'd have to get 10 grand off the F150 and nothing off the Ranger to make them equal. (XLT to XLT) and that is before the Tremor on the F150 which I'm guessing is 3000 or so more than FX4.

RE payload, less equipped F150 should carry more because the extra "stuff" isn't using capacity.

I thought all Rangers were rated to tow 7500 lbs which is slightly more than half of an F150 with MAX tow....

Anyway, dealer shenanigans .... I really hate buying stuff.... i usually just ghost them if they can't respond appropriately. to an e-mail... of course they are all using auto generated text and e-mail...

Out of all the VW dealers in the Metro, there were only two that could answer a simple question, and one that outright lied... I don't expect the Ford to be any better... I'd actually pay a little more to never talk to a salesperson, just let me configure it online, pay a deposit, when it gets here send me a QR so i can go down to the dealer scan the QR and a robot who can only say "my pleasure" give me the keys and temporary plate. Or better yet, just let the car carrier stop at my house...

I had a friend go through the same thing when trying to buy a truck. The previous dealership I worked for had five different locations. He found a truck at a sister store about 80 miles away. He called to ask if it was still available at that store so they put him down as a lead for one of their salesmen and would not transfer it to the other store because they had a lead on it. Our GM called their GM and he would not budge he said to send the customer to them and he could buy it there. Customer was so frustrated with the entire situation that he bought an almost identical truck at an entirely different dealership.

I'm so glad to be away from that circus!

Yep, totally agree, and that's exactly why I bought it. Small travel trailer and I want to try to get back into doing some track events, and if I can tow the car to the events I can have a lighter, non-registered, non-insured track rat that I can really beat on and not care what happens to it.

Again, for comparison.

Ranger Supercrew Wheelbase: 126"
F150 Regular Cab - 122" or 141"
F150 Super Cab - 145" or 164"
F150 Supercrew - 145" or 157"

Couldn't tell you the last time I saw a regular cab F150, even as a work truck around here.
Sorry to hear about your dealership vs stealership experience. You'll have to give us more details about that track rat when that happens.
Do you normally drive at Road Atlanta or AMP MSP?

I'm assuming this will work on 21 as well:

That's 560lbs more payload than my crewcab Ram 1500... I was impressed my father-in-law just bought a new F-150 crew cab 5.0 and his payload was over 2000lbs.

Your Ram must be heavily optioned. Mine has a payload rating of 1691 lbs which is about the same as the OP's truck and the sample F-150 he posted.

Best of luck with your new truck....always exciting.
Q: Is the Easy Fuel (capless filler neck) thing exposed to the elements? It's snowing here and I just thought of it.

Daytime Pics, been raining here so its not clean, but it will have to do. And yes, I am a crap photographer.

A few more. Note on the last picture. Is it REALLY necessary to have that complicated of a battery terminal?

The Raptor's payload is that low? Didn't realize that. I know that's not what they're built for but I figured it would be higher.

Just looked, 1,079 lbs. it’s an 802a package with pano roof but yeah there’s not a lot of payload on account of the softer suspension.

How do you like the baby turbo mill spinning away up there? I loved it in a loaner explorer I drove. To me it seemed extremely well-balanced and dialed-in and I wouldn’t hesitate to consider it in the ranger. Hows the transmission feel as it shifts up from 3rd to 4th or 5th?

we have a 19 foot travel trailer which was ok-ish with our gen 1 tundra. We had a 24’ previously which was just too much for it on trips more than 2-3 hours. moving to the f150, it does fine as a bumper pull just the ball. I suspect if you wanted to pull the same load with the slightly shorter ranger, a steering stabilizer and WDH would probably make for a good, if not mostly-needed, setup for any trip more than a couple of hours. The 150 did porpoise on broken concrete until I swapped shocks, with the 19 footer.

I also added a rear sway by hellwig for the 150, which also improved towing posture.

I love your truck and frankly as a daily would prefer the ranger. Nice buy.

So far the engine/trans combo is pretty nice. There's no vibration at all from the engine sitting at a stop light (with the stop/start disabled).

I know there's lots of talk on the 10R80 and its shift oddities. So far I haven't noticed anything I wouldn't expect. It skips gears on occasion and it heads straight for 10th under modest acceleration. It's a transmission that does a lot of shifting. It boggles the mind at the controling it must take to do it getting all the brakes and clutches synched up. I plan on doing a pan drop and filter somewhere around the 30K mark, so we'll see what happens between now and then.

As for towing, the first order of business will be to purchase and install the brake controller. Then I plan on borrowing an RV from a friend that has one slightly larger than what I would actually buy and give it a go for a couple of short weekend trips maybe to north GA and see how it goes before making any decisions on what other gear I need.

Is the fan clutch driven or electric motor? Usually an electric fan system has two motors and blades...your looks like one giant fan.

Engine driven, electrically controlled from the looks of it.

OMG, how have I gotten this far into the post and not mentioned it.

Recommended Oil is 5W30!! :) Not surprised though, it stands a chance of being worked hard.

Mine is as heavy as they can get without having the eco diesel. I've seen some of them with payload ratings under 1000lbs. I have a 4wd Laramie Longhorn which got you all options (except no sunroof on mine) + big fuel tank. All of which kills payload. I think they payload ratings got a couple hundred pounds better with the new 5th gen Ram as well. The F-150 I referenced was a well optioned crew cab as well, but was a 2wd.

Mostly RA and AMP, this was my old track car. 1991 Miata that I've ever since regretted selling, but not much I can do about that now.
