I have a 2018 Subaru Forester with the 2.5L engine.I know it takes 5.1qrts but when I changed the oil I put 5qrts in and it read on the dipstick I believe right in the middle. If I top it off with the 1oz I doubt that it would bring it up to below the top notch on the dipstick.Should I add oil or just leave it?Thanks Joe

I would leave it and check in a week then a month and make sure it doesn't use any oil. Make sure the car is level. What does it say in the owners manual for checking oil? Some vehicles are picky i.e. check after hot and shut down for several minutes. Anything between the hash marks is acceptable

I'd put it whatever it takes to get to the full line.

probably 5.5qt from 5qt reaching the middle.

I just dump a five quart jug in our '17 Forester and call it good.
Over the course of the recommended 5K drain, it shows no consumption so I'm not too concerned about the .1 quart.
These cars do have a low oil indication light, so that provides an extra layer of protection should the engine exhibit abnormally high consumption, as some of the earlier examples apparently did.

I fill my Legacy with 5 quarts and call it a day. It gets me to just below the full mark, though - more than the halfway up you claim.

I fill my 01 Forester with 5 quarts as well, which brings it to just below the little notch above the "Full" point. I too would add whatever it takes to get to the full line.... but this is after you dump in 5qts, run it for 5 minutes, let it sit for 20, and then check it. I always try to check my oil when it's warm and fill it then. Cold oil measurements are kind of a worthless measurement IMHO...

Just put in 5 quarts

I have seen that on other 2.5's. I would put in exactly what is called for and then put a scribe mark on the dipstick. A very inaccurate dipstick that Subaru never did anything about..
