Gooday,

Im getting a new elantra 2018 with the 2.0 L non turbo engine.

The oil cap calls for 5w20. Its does not require synthetic and here in Canada, the manual recommend 6000 km oil change.

Should I go Full Synthetic or conventional? This engine has timing chain, variable valve timing of course, multiport injection, so i dont have to worry about fuel dillution.

I was planning to use the good old castrol GTX.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

I have been running 5w30 pennzoil platinum and now 5w30 Quaker State Ultimate Durability since new. I did run some Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 the first few winters as i got a good deal on it. Mine is the mpfi 1.8, probably similar to the 2.0.

I've run a bunch of different brands and both 5W-20 and -30 in my Elantra. These are good engines and won't really mind what you run. I tend to stay with 5w30 most of the time, but really that's just because my other vehicle uses 5w30 so it's convenient for me.

My Santa Fe called for 5w20 and I ran 0w30 with excellent success. (See signature).

Your vehicles manual will have a range of viscosities you can use and in those 2L engines a 30wt is better IMO. You could get by with any conventional that meets the requirements stated in the manual (nothing special). My sister uses bulk oil change shops when she changes hers in the 2017 she owns.

Enjoy, they are good engines.

If it's a GDI engine I would run 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum D1 Gen2 which is a thin 30 weight oil that resists change in viscosity with fuel dilution - great oil .

There is nothing wrong with using Castrol GTX in your Elantra. Use it with confidence

Agreed

At 6000km intervals i doubt dilution will be an issue. I'm currently using 5w20 in the Sportage 2.4L GDi. GTX 5w20 is now GTX Ulteaclean (both 5w20 and 5w30) which is Castrol's Synthetic blend. The heavier grades are just "GTX" and labeled Conventional in the PDS. IMO, you'll be just fine since specs are met.

Enjoy the Elantra

It is MPI. In my 2017 Elantra have used 5w-20, 5w30, and 10w30, semi-synthetic, synthetic, and conventional. Does not seem to make a difference. Runs the same and gas mileage is about the same.

In Canada with 6,000 km intervals, I would recommend 5W20 synthetic.

Have maintained 4 different non-turbo Theta engines (2 GDI) with synthetic 5W20 and OEM oil filter, with no oil issues or or oil loss.

Used Shell, QS, Mobil and Valvoline synthecs, with purchases based on price and availability.

The big advantage with synthetics is engine protection during start-ups, especially in cold weather.

5w30 in mine, 5w-20 when its really cold here, which is still way warmer than your area. Always synthetic, but with your short change intervals, the GTX should be fine. These engines seem to like the 5w30 on hotter days.

The cap says 5w20, but your owners manual will show both 5w20 and 5w30 for the same temperature ranges. I think it even shows 10w30 for temps above 0*f. I have the same car, just the 2017 2.0L non GDI/turbo engine. I'm running 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum in mine.

L8R,
Matt
