I have 2017 Ram 5.7 Hemi and just reached 100,000 miles. I will be doing my own oil changes now that the extended warranty has ended. I want to switch from 5w20 to 5w30? Will it set off the “check engine light?” Will the engine explode? Lol Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Been running Mobil 1 5w-30 in mine for the past 3 years with no issues...

When the 5w20 at one point in the engine was thicker(Yes, all oils are very thick) than 5w30, did your engine explode? No. So why would it explode now on 5w30? Run it with confidence.
If that Ram was mine I would run Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w30 in it, it is a legit oil.

A check engine light for what?

I've been using a 5w30 for over 30,000 miles in my 2019 hemi. 20,000 was a Euro aka thick 30, and then 10,000 with a "normal" 5w30.

I've been considering mixing 5w30 and 5w40 in equal parts to thicken up a hair, but I'm not decided yet.

I’m sure there are.

Probably in the same places as the Toyota electric oil pump that’s calibrated for a 20-grade.

Older hemi's absolutely throw a check engine light on heavy viscositys. It's all over the forums. They run some calculations based on various sensor inputs and throw a CEL when its out of range.

Newer ones like mine, don't. I don't know at what year this changed.

2017 should be fine as far as the CEL is concerned. I've run 0w-40 in mine but have settled on 5w-30.

There are also stories about there being a "soft" code stored in the PCM on the newer ones without throwing a check engine light. Maybe I'll dig out my OBDII scanner and have a look.

My 08 always threw a code/CEL with 5-30 in it. Haven’t tried anything besides 5-20 in my 2021.

08 was an oil burner so I ran 5-30 YBP in it to slow the consumption.

No codes.
