Yes, I'd do it with 0w-20 without batting an eye with the Wife's Durango with the same engine as you

Hmmmm.. seriously? You're ok with your oil hitting high 5 cSt under load, towing up a mountain at low speeds?

Yes.

Yes.

You're making me reconsider that Valvoline 5w20 conventional stash on my oil shelf.

Then that leaves the element causing all the restriction.

Heading to the dealer to get a OEM filter today. If that solves the issue I'll cancel the dealer visit scheduled for tomorrow.

Any idea where you can get these OEM Mopar filters for less than the $16 the dealer charges for them?

$10 at Walmart. fram ultra are even cheaper at Walmart.

I would give Castrol Magnatec a go after you settle the filter issues. There are lots of stories on here of users liking the way it quiets down their engines.

Being that's it's a cartridge filter setup, will the engine run without a filter?

That would be quick check to see if flow through the filter is causing the ticking issue.

Not sure I'm willing to try that :P

I swapped the filter out tonight to the OEM Mopar filter.

The construction of the Mopar did not appear as well made as the Fram. However it did have 8 more pleats and was a fraction shorter (like half a mm).

Yes.

That seems a little extreme IMO.

The engine is designed for it. If they can spec 5w-20 for it in a 1-ton van, obviously they aren't concerned about it having an impact on durability, as that application, loaded to the gills, is going to put far more strain on that little engine than anything you can possibly do to it in your van.

If they were concerned, they'd spec the 0w-40 for it for "extreme use" like they do with the 6.4L.

Well, is the tick still there ?

Yes, still there.

It only lasts for 1-2 seconds until oil reaches the top end. So this is definitely oil related, or more specifically related to the engine design not being able to keep oil from draining back into the oil pan... isn't that what an ADBV is for?

Please elaborate. I have a dealer visit tomorrow to review with them.

Yes, it can be an HLA bleeding down or it can also be a chain tensioner.

Your engine has HLA's (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) which keep tension on the roller followers that ride on the cam lobes, which in turn actuate the valves. You can see the roller followers and the "channel" the HLA's sit down into (to get fed oil) in this picture:

These HLA's have a spring and plunger in them just like a traditional flat-tappet or roller "lifter" and they are fed oil, whilst the spring is supposed to keep them somewhat expanded when there is no oil pressure. Sometimes these bleed down which causes them to be loose, which then results in a brief period of "ticking" until they are pumped up again.

Sorry that is what I meant.

My Santa Fe HLA's would bleed down all the time even after being parked only an hour. On cold days it would tick really loudly. I tried every sort of additive and oil weight to fix this and nothing would fix it. I found out it was common and just left it be. It never caused any long term issues and make it to 300,000 miles before dying of something else.

Yes, it can be a very common issue for certain engine families and generally has no impact on longevity or performance.
