I think it's more than that, I think it's the whole filter. Center tube restricted, filter element restricted, and a super stiff ADBV shutting off the flow of oil through the inlet holes.

I was going to suggest going to a thicker oil (5w30), but it looks like you're already doing that. The owners manual allows it for those that don't know.

A member here had one that noticed the tick going away with a thicker 5w20. May have been the viscosity, may have been the brand, but either way, oil seemed to fix it.

My brother has a 2016 Wrangler. I haven't heard it tick yet. Keep us posted.

Webfors my dad's PentaStar has always had 5w30 because that is what the fleet oil change place used and then that is what he used. We get some pretty cold temperatures here and it was perfectly fine. (Conventional)

That said my father-inlaw I have on the Amsoil train with extended OCI's with 5w20 synthetic and his is fine too. Just so you know.

Different filter & try Quaker State Ultimate Durability. This motor oil is "super" quiet in ANY ride I have introduced it to -- that being & paired with a Fram Ultra.

I have used Valvoline 5w30 conventional ever since I drained the factory fill in my minivan, no ticking. I do have a little bit of a groan that lasts maybe half a second when the temps dip close to freezing, but from my research it seems it's a serpentine belt pulley or tensioner.

My wife's quiet FWIW, but we are running markedly different oils if your sig is current.

Not using the OEM filter. I'm thinking replacing the oil filter is the next best step.

So I am to assume a Honeywell Defence oil filter (based on your sig) then?

Also, curious about the 5w30, particularly for a Canadian winter..... I run 0w-20 in ours year-round, since it calls for a 5w-20

20 weight is too thin for the towing we do through the summer. I looked at the spec sheets between Pennzoil Platinum 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 and there wasn't much gained in cold flow properties.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 cold weather numbers are significantly better than the recommended conventional 5w20 so I figured I would stick with one oil year round.

Here's some reading on water temps I got in the van this summer towing through Cape Breton, Nova Scotia:

Well, the same engine in the 1-ton 3500 Promaster van still spec's 5w-20 (with 5w30 being allowed if 5w-20 is not available) and given it is a relatively new engine design, I imagine it is far more tolerant of thinner oils than we give it credit for. It isn't like some of the Ford engines that spec'd 5w30 one day and 5w-20 the next, LOL

The groan is normal. Both the new one my FIL has and my dad's 2012 with high miles both do it. I have similar in the Journey on really cold days although it's not as pronounced.

LOL, true.

After seeing the water temps reached, I'm not confident high 5 or low 6 cst is going to protect. The promaster might have a more agressive cooling system... not sure.

Since I will probably get rid of this van in 4 years anyway (history tells me) I might as well go back to the $10 jug of 5w20 and not think twice about it. Save the syn for the 2.0T.

I did not! I'm not as consistent on Bitog as I used to be

My favourite was the power steering groan the Expedition used to make when it got below -20C. It sounded like a heffer in heat, and it was LOUD! Did not last long however.

Yes, I'd do it with 0w-20 without batting an eye with the Wife's Durango with the same engine as you

My latest oil analysis that I sampled at 4700km.

This is a cartridge filter. The center tube is plastic cage with probably 5% restriction max (pulled that number out of my rear but you get the point). The ADBV is built into the housing.

This is what I used in my previous van. No ticking... hmmm... well until the head failed, then the block. The new engine was whisper quiet!

I have 10 jugs of Valvoline 5w20 conventional sitting on my oil shelf too

Hmmmm.. seriously? You're ok with your oil hitting high 5 cSt under load, towing up a mountain at low speeds?

I think their analysis machine was broken that day

0's... wow.

It still looks this good after 12,000km run. Although the 0 on the aluminum turns into a 1 with iron at about 5. I can't find this report but I'm sending in a report shortly and can post it. This will be 15,000km!
