I'm trying to help a friend with his 2015 Escape. The Chilton manual has this as the last step for replacing the battery: "If installing a new battery, use the scan tool to carry out the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) reset after the battery is connected."

Is this step necessary? I have no experience with late model Fords. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, its necessary. The energy management system tailors the charge rate and energy management to the age and expected capacity of the battery. They do strange things if the BMS isnt reset with a capable scan tool after battery replacement

Will the vehicle work okay if you don't do this ? Yeah, it will. Is it better to do it if you can ? Sure. I've always wondered if independent shops, Walmart, Autozone, etc do this or not. I'd bet a lot of times it doesn't get done....

If you have an ODBII reader and FORScan software, you can reset "BMS" with it.

Good to know. The video does not help, but the comments do.

I have fixed many a thing using YouTube videos as guidance.

If you read the video comments, you cycle the high beams instead. I wonder if this information is included in the Owner's Manual?

my answer is maybe, before i knew about bms i replaced a battery for a lady customer in a bmw. the battery cost was high, and 2 batteries were listed, one larger than the other, but the same price. naturally, i picked the bigger battery. it was a tight fit in the trunk, but it installed fine. the charging system didn't work correctly. when she brought the car back, a different team member tested the battery and charging which appeared fine but is wasn't just my 2 cents

Is this procedure different than letting the vehicle sit unused for the 8 or so hours for the BMS to update to the battery state of charge?
