2014 Ram 1500, Diesel!

Announced on Valentines day, 2014 Ram 1500 3.0L Diesel with 8 speed auto. If this is well built i will have to try to buy one in a few years. What do you think the fuel economy will be?

My guess, City MPG 21, Hwy 31.

I would guess the diesel V6 will add $3,000-$4,000 dollars over a gas V6 8 speed. The 8 speed should handle the power and is already priced into a gas truck. I'd be very interested in a diesel quad cab 4x4 1500. I am assuming they found a way to pass emissions without hugely expensive parts or they would not go down this road.

Ford says "Ecoboost" Dodge says "EcoDiesel" i say, "Finally!"

That's great news for diesel lovers (me), although I would have rather seen the Cummins 4BT over the Fiat that's also going into the Grand Cherokee.

They make 4 cyl cummins for bread trucks etc.

I like the idea of this fiat version chasing a different audience. So they won't be poaching each other between 1/2 and 3/4 ton.

Wouldn't own it if you gave it to me. Expensive, finicky, fragile, and thirsty...diesel has jumped the shark.

I agree, as they have become overly complex due to govt regs.

Diesels used to have significant advantages due to simplicity, but not any more...

Let the early adopters test it out. I'll watch.

I won't even bother...just not interested anymore. If I want mileage, I'll take a truck with the Pentastar & 8-speed trans. If I need to tow, I'll take a 2500 with a Hemi. I would only consider a new diesel if it came with a LIFETIME warranty with unlimited mileage!

I wonder if this engine uses the hand-grenade Bosch CP4 series pump?

(And I wonder if VW will object to calling it "Ecodiesel"?)

The 3.0L uses a Bosch CP4.2 pump.

I hope its not plagued with a Bosch Death Pump of some form or other. Maybe i'l have to keep my P7100 12v truck forever and just pretend it has more than 3 seats and 2 doors.

My mileage guess is based on what the Pentastar 8 speed gets times 1.25. I would hope it can get at least 25% more efficiency than a gasser. Most of that [3.6l] fuel economy is in the transmission and body tweaks. It realistically could be even higher. They have a grand caravan getting 50% more MPG than the gas equivalent in Europe. However it could easily be worse than 25% if its a bad design [indian compact truck that never made it to the US and i forgot its pathetic name]. Oh yeah, mahindra.

I guess one negative comment, without ever seeing or driving the vehicle, isn't enough anymore.

It has a Bosch CP4 pump. That tells me EVERYTHING I need to know! The CP4 is a bad design. It is a hand grenade with the pin pulled. They are failing in Fords. They are failing in VW's. They are failing in Duramaxes. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results!

My understanding is that it's not the fault of the pump so much as the fault of our terrible quality diesel fuel that has very low lubricity compared to Europe.

Pretty much my take as well. Let somebody else get the first ones and then I can decide.
