Have been away from the boards for a while. Sold my BMW 335i. No oil related failures, just change water pump, brakes, head gasket replacements in addition to the usual costly maitainance was getting into the thousands. Bought a 2014Honda Accord V6. First oil change recommended by dealer was 5k. Took it to a different dealer than I purchased from and they said they use only full synthetic for the this engine. When I purchased, they said it used a synthetic blend. I can't tell from the manual, saying only to use 0-20. My previous accord went to 220k on dino oil and never burned a drop.
Thanks,
RJ

I thought most 0w20s were a blend...at least a blend I should say.

Change your tranny fluid when they say so! V6 hondas are hard on trans.

Though I saw a guy with an oddysey towing a bay boat with alaskan plates last year...so that might be an internet myth lol

To meet the viscosity, cold cranking and voality requirements of a 0w20 you need to have at least some synthetic group 3 base oils. Most 0w20s are marketed as full synthetic.

and what is the relevance to this post?

most 0w20 are called full syn.. the only non-full syn I know of is the honda semi-syn 0w20

Looking back when I first began surfing the site I was amazed and bamboozzooled by the amount of information exchange between forum members in 2003.

I recall Bob Winters taking time to explain to new members in detail in long posts benefits of mineral v synthetic/semi etc over and over again he never declined a new member and NEVER told them to go use the Search Button. The main objective being to select an oil appropriate for the vehicle and it's use to achieve maximum life for the vehicle at the lowest term running cost.

Things on the way some how have become blurred since the Group 3 v PAO challenge of Mobil v Castrol at the FTC. Many members trying True Synthetic for long long drains, others jumping in on the Thin Band wagon and anything thicker grade is Sin (Not Syn).

We have had FAQs answered from oil manufacturers such as Castrol etc. Evolution of OLM (oil life monitors) debates such as do I follow OLMs ? Or do I use UOAs ? Or the OEM recommended OCI's.

Others trying various brands, grades whatever is on sale, claiming NO draining will achieve long vehicle life there is plenty of safety margin in Oils anyway ie there is diversity here. So what I am saying the answer you will likely get is the one that the member is passionate about.

What I have learnt is to use the appropriate grade and use the appropriate OCI for the driving conditions normal/extreme etc. The oil should have the OEM builders approval not just "meets OEM specs" if possible. As your manual is unclear regarding base oil quality which to me means its not that IMPORTANT for this vehicle I would use a semi synthetic as full synthetics which are now better understood for high operating temperature use.

Almost all OEMs state to use the same OCI regardless if the base oil makeup is SYN, SEMI syn or DINO. Oil manufactures state the same advice on their websites.

Based on your success with the previous Accord I would use a semi synthetic with OEM builder approval and maintain correct OCIs as which is more important than the base oil quality. If you have an OLM then follow the OLM for OCI.

problem I have if it's 1% synthetic it's semi synthetic...I ignore the whole concept and concentrate on price.

Our Honda is doing fine on full synthetic 5w-20's and 0w-20's. We follow the maintenance minder since it's pretty accurate.

I'd use a 0w-20, and at least a semi-syn one. Although there are full syn 0w-20's out there for quite cheap, so I'd not hesitate to spend the few extra bucks on full syn, and run out the maintenance minder.

I've used 0w20 M1 and PP in my Honda. I will try QSUD and VSP, eventually. I do prefer the M1, but any name brand 0w20 should run very well in that car.

More important than oil brand is regular (weekly) checking of oil level in your VCM V6. Honda is in the process of finalizing settlement of a class action law suit where VCMs have experienced excessive oil consumption during VCM cylinder shutdown (steady state highway cruising).

I've used Castrol Edge and M1 0W-20 on my VCM V6 Oddy with good results. Any SN rated 0W-20 should be fine. However, when it comes time to change the Tranny fluid make sure to use ONLY the Honda brand ATF-DW1.

Mazda Genuine Motor Oil (by Idemitsu) makes the best 0w-20 since they put in 600 ppm moly. Most other oils use something around 100 ppm only. Could be extra protection there.

i bought a Honda CRV new and based on all my "studying" my first change i used Mazda High Moly 0W20 then used Toyota 0W20 and will continue until their formula changes.

did using the Moly help? who knows but since you are on this forum you already have taken the step towards the dark side.

enjoy the new car.
