I took my dad to the stealer today to pick up a Chevy Trailblazer he bought. I started looking at the newly designed 2014 Chevy half ton pickup. They have made some nice changes like give the back seat some more room in the 4 door version, have a aluminum hood now, steps in the rear bumper, the tail gate has something that slows it down so when you open it, it doesn't just fall down but rather comes down slowly. Led lights under the bed rails, and felt in the wheel wells to prevent rock chips. There's more I can't remember everything. The biggest thing I noticed in Bitog fashion was that the oil cap said DEXOS 0w20. What does everyone think? As far as I know they have always had 5w30 recommended.

Cripes! Pickups are pricey. At least when souped up.

I think the 20wt thing was proven long ago. If that's the spec, I wouldn't think twice.

Ford has been on the 20wt kick for what over a decade? I was wondering when GM would get on it.

The 14 also has all new motors so I'm not surprised they changed the oil spec.

I don't believe so. IIRC, they are producing a bit more power.

This was a 5.3 I looked at. I think the hp rating was 355. They still have the 4.3, it has been redesigned also.

Yes the 4.3 is still around as is the 5.3 & 6.2, the 4.8 has been discontinued, the new 4.3 is based on the new v8's and not the old 5.7, the biggest thing is that the new engines are di, and of course the afm and vvt carries over…

The 2014 pickups have engines that are the same displacement as the old engines, but are complete redesigns. If the fill cap says 0w-20, run the 0w-20.

So then "a" 4.3 is in the lineup, but "the" 4.3 is no longer with us

It shares noting with the old 4.3 except size. It is a basically a LS based V6. 292 HP and north of 300 ft/lbs of torque. Again for Bob is the oil guy GM haters and GM know nothings the only thing it shares is displacement.
Enjoy the rest of your night.

That's right, the new 4.3 also comes with afm as does the 6.2.

Yes, it does get old sometimes, doesn't it?

That new 4.3 has amazing power density and economy.

Not sure what's "amazing." Ford's 3.7 has been out for a few years and has 302hp/278tq. Without having to deal with the direct injection.

Didn't need to hear the Ford data since we were not even talking Fords but since you had to pipe up, here we go.

Any real pickup owner will be pleased to note that the new GM 4.3 offers 305 foot pounds of torque. If you use your truck like a truck that number is more important than HP. Tows 7200 pounds which is more than Ford, too.

And you'd better get over the DI issues you have because it's coming soon to an engine near you whether you like it or not!

Fords 3.7 is also dohc, while gm's 4.3 is still a push rod.

1. When you look at "power density," that you brought up, Ford is ahead with the entire truck line. 75 ftlb/L vs 70. So the Ford engine is extra amazing.

1.2. And we're comparing existing Ford engines vs future Chevy engines.

2. A real pickup owner will likely never know the difference between 305 and 278. Both have good power and will get your groceries fine.

3. A real pickup owner looking at serious towing isn't going to get the base engine.

4. I have no problem with DI, if I'm getting something for it. Clearly in this case I'm not. I didn't buy an Ecoboost for similar reasons, and it has some clear performance gains over the 5.0. Not worth the added system complexity and what I intended to do with it which is keep it a long time.
