As far as Aisin goes, I work as a mechanic for a Hino truck dealer, who uses an Aisin automatic in their smaller 4cyl. medium duty trucks and we have seen very few issues with them, as long as they are maintained properly. Aisin also built the older 3 spd autos in the older jeep wranglers and cherokee's, they have always been regarded as nearly bullet proof. I believe they also build some of toyota's autos. They seem to have a better track record than most, though this might not mean anything in regards to the dodge unit, but i'd take one over chryslers own automatics any day.

I had a 98 or 99 Ram 5.2 and it was not the world's best truck. But I have also had a bad one from GM, too. Buy enough of ANY brand and they'll make you a lemon. My current Chrysler is without exception my best new car ever purchased in over 40 years, nearly perfect.

Plus there's the stealership side of this. Many folks who have bad experiences could have been really helped by a little SERVICE from the stealer. Most times they just get run around a lot!

Absolutely. The same family owns the Dodge and Chevy dealer( actually closed it down a couple years ago but had it when I had my Chevy's )where I do business. My family has dealt with them since the late 60's. GREAT people. If you do have a problem with the vehicle they get it taken care of and they will fight for you or at least treat you fair if you are paying for it.

On the other side is the Toyota dealer where I bought that hunk of junk 2005 Tacoma. That place was HORRENDOUS as far as customer service in the parts & service deptartments. The area rep for Toyota was a real loser too who wouldn't even do his job and come look at my truck( major paint issues on new truck )after 3+ months of trying to get an appt with him. He wouldn't even return calls to me or the dealer.

Any time I have had a problem with one of my MOPARs( Dodge/Jeep )or a Chevy I know that Foss will do everything they can to make it right be that fighting for warranty coverage or treating me fairly if it is out of pocket. Can't ask for more. They also treat me right on the new vehicle purchases too. Had the Toyota dealer made ANY attempt to take care of just ONE of the myriad of problems that hunk of junk had, and had the rep at least called the dealer or me back as he should have, maybe I would not be so anti Toyota.

The dealership part of it definitely plays into it for me too.

My old dodge 3500 DRW CTD 4x4, had front end problems, doors rattled, shorts in dash. leaked oil KDP..YES, it was a 24V.. they wen't immune, 3rd brake light leaked and ruined my subs, needed batteries every year... IT WAS JUUUUNK.
MY SUPERDUTY is 100000x the truck the dodge is/was

yeah, and for every negative story there are always folks like my FIL who towed a 40 foot beavertailed trailer with 2 cars in it all over the US in his 3500 Ram with 5 speed stick.

This truck was virtually never driven light in it's life and was sold with 350k miles on it and ran excellent.

You only hear about the [censored] stories, the millions of happy owners don't put their positive comments on the Internet.

Anecdotal evidence might not be accurate, but for most people it is the most important. Every car debated on here is filled with stories of lore- good or bad. We know we can't trust any reliability reports, so let's just tell stories. We all know stories on the internet are always true.

The Ford transmission has proven itself to be just as good as the Allison, if not better, since its introduction in '03.

The new 6.7 Cummins has proven to be extremely problematic since it was introduced due mainly to its emission system. I know a few guys who have them and they have all needed to be towed to the dealer at one time or another, one several times.

As far as 3rd brake lights go, you need to watch the one on the Super Duty too.

Rather than design a different light for the SD when it was introduced, they slapped on the CHMSL from the Ranger. It uses a foam gasket that tends to flatten out over time, especially if the light housing is overtightened, and you can get leaks into the cab. There are a number of ways to fix/prevent it, but it's still kind of a half [censored] gasket. With a better gasket it would never leak.

I'd be more happy with a less powerful version that gets better mileage.

Stupid question. Why would a person buy a H-D truck with a diesel if they didn't need to tow heavy loads? Better fuel economy would be nice, but not at the expense of power. Buy a 1/2 ton if that's what your looking for.

I would take milage over power. My 235hp CTD would get 18mpg, which was GREAT considering it was a 5spd, 4.10 geared, 4x4, 3500 DRW, quad cab.
BUT, it was So underpowered that old ladies driving school buses would pull away from me leaving stop lights

Unless your towing monster campers a de rated 220hp Cummins is plenty of power.

When you buy real trucks, IE with air brakes, you can pick different engine options depending on the trucks usage.

Also it would be nice to get a diesel in a 1/2 ton, but the heavy duty guys kill those off, because they would take sales away from 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. I know someone who worked over at Dodge and the Cummins guys killed that, they didn't want sales taken from the 6 cylinder 3/4 ton trucks.

bottom line, if you want a workhorse expect to pay big bucks. not for the truck, but for maintenance.

like others have said here, the 12v cummins is probably the most solid, next to the ford 7.3L. otherwise enjoy buying a new bling truck and impress all the other cowboys, lord knows i love to attract other men too.

220HP isn't enough to pull a greased string out of a cat's butt.

You'll be the guy in the slow lane with your flashers on because you can't get out of your own way.

Most school buses are in that power range, as are many straight trucks.

A good friend of mine for a number of years drove a GMC Top Kick straight frame with a C7 CAT in it making around 220HP. It was a moving truck and got out of its own way just fine. It wasn't a rocket ship, but it did the job.

with all the new cars in your tagline, its no wonder that you do not have a clue how diesels have moved america along quite well in the past 40 years with less than 200hp.

My employer ran a large fleet of 225 hp tandem axle dump trucks up until very recently when the same engines can be rated at 300 hp. The ones I have bought were 270hp and 860 lb-ft and the operators were quite pleased to hear they were getting that.

Most of the 3/4 diesel engines are in fact derated when put into the 450 class and larger truck. 325 hp is the largest you can get in a 6.7 cummins in a Freightliner or PACCAR product.

I'm a Ford guy liking the Ram trucks more and more. A business associate just turned 105K miles on his 08 Ram Hemi Pick Up. It sees lots of hard use on and off road, it runs like a champ and looks good too. The only problem he had was a sticking caliper which was taken care of under warranty when the truck was about 6 months old.

Yep, because they are designed to run for hundreds of thousands of miles. 200k-300k on a commercial truck is nothing. The light duty pumped diesels they put in the 3/4 and 1 ton pickups wouldn't hold up to that kind of use at those power ratings.

Unlike Nascar fan up top, who clearly has never driven a medium or heavy duty truck; and didn't own any diesel trucks from 2000 or early before these silly HP wars started.

I guess that 160hp Cummins 5.9 and the 225hp 7.3 Powerstroke that were in my driveway were figments of my imagination.

You keep telling yourself that 220hp is all you'll ever need.

Our 99 PSD would RUN and HIDE from my 98.5 24V CTD. Both were manual trans and 4.10 geared. The CTD in stock form is a SLOOOWW reving pig. The V8, while less torque down low spins up MUUCH faster in my experience. The 99 PSD would EASILY outpull the CTD at highway speed. You just had to rev it.

The 99 stock was 235hp, I think. Grossing 42,000lbs, some hills would pull me down to 35mph floored. The 24v CTD would be down to 27mph with that same load. My current 03 6.0 PSD stock @ 325hp will pull the same load up the same hills 60mph - the posted speed limit... in 5th gear (direct) being a 4.10 geared & 6spd truck.
