I just picked up a 2.0L 2013 Mazda 3 with 35K miles. Based on the service records that came with it, it should be due for an oil change in about 3K miles. I'm planning on using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20, but had a question about the filter, as I have little to no experience with Mazdas. I'll be sticking with a 7,500 OCI.

I was really happy with the OEM filters on my Hyundai Elantra (was totaled in a wreck before Christmas). Are the Mazda OEM filters of similar quality, or are there other options out there better suited for the Skyactive engine?

Thanks for your help.

I've read that many aftermarket filters have issues with the sky active engines and to try and stick with oem. That's what I do. The filters are made in Japan and seem to be of good quality.

Really? How so?

Wix makes an oil filter specifically for the Skyactiv motor. I believe the part # is 57002. I use oe filters from Mazda on my 13, they are about $8.00.

Haha I don't know the specifics, I just remembered reading about it a bunch when getting my Mazda. From that I decided to just go oem, which are actually pretty cheap at the dealer.

I would only get a dealer OE filter at this point in time. Too much misinformation out there now. I thought there were two different 2.0L engines out in 2013 and one is SkyActiv. Make sure which engine you have before getting any filter. Ed

Use any Purolator #4612 filter for the skyactic 2.0. Ive used l14612 and psl14612 on our mazda so far with no issues. At work we use Promotive PH4612 filter which is a professional (read bulk) version of the purolator classic and they work excellent as well.
