2011 Toyota Corrola

WE are picking up a 2011 Corrola on Tuesday and it comes
with 2 yrs scheduled maintenance and recommends 0-20 oil
My question is isn't 0-20 a little thin ??
And 5000 mile oil changed especially on a 4 cylinder
a little long ?? or am I being over reactive ??
I know 0-20 would have to be a synthetic but still

You are being over reaction. Follow Toyota's recommendations. Especially if you are using Toyota 0W-20, which is an excellent oil.

its actually 10000 mile intervals. 5, 15, 25 are just inspections and tire rotations

5,000 seems pretty frequent to me...if it were 10,000 for the oil, then I would be OK with the 0W20, since, as pointed out, it's synthetic...and that's the viscosity on which Toyota built the engine to run (think clearances, materials, all of which are changed a bit from the "good old days").

You should be fine following the manufacturer's recommendation. Look closely and see if there is a "severe service" definition and when the oil is recommended to be changed in those circumstances. I wouldn't run a 5W30 or any other viscosity conventional oil in this for 10K...unless, maybe, you drove exclusively long highway trips...

FWIW, my '06 Corolla specifies 5K oil changes with 5W30...so that's what I do, regardless of oil type...and I use whatever synthetic 5W30 I can get on sale...the Edge in it now was $ 0.98 on clearance...

5000 is not to long.
It's on Toyota's dime so no worries.

Free scheduled maintenance isn't really a selling point for me. Maybe they could just give me the parts and I'll do it myself.

20 weight oils have been mainstream since 1999 when Ford and Honda began recommending them. If they were "too thin" I think we'd know by now.

I think it should be 0w-20 for 10,000 miles.

My only ever corolla died at 213,000 miles. Engine still started all winter, but [original] clutch died and the interior and exterior just weren't sinking another 500 bucks into. Rest assured the engine is the least of your concerns with a Corolla.

Actually the Toyota Brand 0W-20 is a very "thin" oil; thinner than any other oil made at least on start-up, but that's a good thing not a bad thing.
Keep in mind, when does most engine wear occur? On start-up and during the warming up period, and even the "thin" Toyota 0W-20 oil is still thicker than necessary. But give credit to Toyota engineers for trying. The Toyota oil also has higher than average antiwear additives in it's formulation.

I have been using the 0w-20 in my Prius for the last 21k. For some reason I have noticed that 0w-20 does not turn very dark after 5-6k intervals, not that it means anything. Even on my friend's 2012 Civic, the factory fill of 0w-20 still looked very clean after 6200 miles.

Despite the Toyota USA recommended intervals of 10k, I have been replacing mine every 5,000 miles. Toyota Canada, which does not have free maintenance, has been mandating 5,000 mile intervals on 0w-20. The car's maintenance message actually says "oil maintenance required" every 5k; the early 2010 Prius cars were still on every 5k. It was only later was the 10k interval adopted (along with Toyotacare), so I'm not convinced that the longer interval was done for anything other than marketing, free maintenance, and TCO reasons.
