I've been doing 5-6k oil changes on my Sonata and lately I've noticed it will consume about 1/2 to 1 quart of oil between changes. The car has been maintained regularly and doesn't have any obvious leaks. I'm thinking about trying PP or M1 to curb the consumption. Worth a try? Car has 64k miles. I don't have documentation for all of the previous oil changes, so I'm not even going to try to have the dealer look at it.

I'm looking to hear from other Sonata/Optima GDI owner or anyone with knowledge of direction injection power plants. I have the N/A 2.4L.

1/2 to 1 quarts isn't too much but considering it doesn't have that many miles its not great either.

If you're using 5W-20 you may want to try 5w30 (The manual allows for 5W-20/30). Also, consider using Pennzoil Ultra as it has a very low NOAK rating, it may help with oil consumption.

Also if that doesn't help you can try a High Mileage oil like Max Life.

My 2011 Sonata 2.4 GDI engine used .5 to .7 qt. between 6k changes from the time it was new. I traded in at 30k for a 2013 with same specs (lease was up). This new 2013 has not used any oil at all. Changed the oil at 5.5k miles and the level was at the top mark on the dipstick. FWIW

That is normal consumption even for a new Sonata at 5-6k. At 10k they come in nearly empty, maybe 1.5-2 quarts left in them.
 
Oh geez. So I guess this is a "problem" engine like my mom's Camry.

Is PU really worth the price over PP? I really don't want to spend $8/quart on a product that might help.
 
Was just local wally and they only had one jug of PU on the shelf and of course the 1 quart bottles for $9 each. Is this stuff being disconutined? According to some other threads, this is the most suitable oil for my car, but if its being discontinued, would Valvoline SynPower, Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum be equally suitable?

Given you are in Texas and the Sonata is specced for 5w30, use the 5w30. I have a 2013 Sonata 2.4L and no issues with oil consumption. Have about 25,000 miles so far.
 
are you saying your 2.4 is using up to a quart in 5-6000 miles???
If that is what you are saying the engine is perfect with its oil use! The valve guides are getting lubed and the rest is also normal

Yeah pretty much. Why are folks with 13s not having issues? Obviously they made a change to the engine.

I do really short OCIs since I drive in a lot of stop and go traffic. Also I only have 9k in mileage ATM, however it may start to burn oil later on in it's life.

If you don't feel like running PU you could try Quaker State Ultimate Durability (I'ts $21 at Walmart).

I would definitely try 5w30, your engine will probably run quieter as well.
 
My daughter has her 2011 Sonata 2.4 a year and a half now with 41k and I've probably done the last three oil changes. No consumption between changes. I use a combo of 5w20 and 5w30 of the same brand; Havoline syn now, Formula Shell syn before that and PP the first time.
Not sure changing oils will make a difference. Have you pulled the under engine cover to look for leaks there? Could this be a pcv issue?
Not saying the consumption is alarming, but it seems to be doing it now and not before.
 
No GDI in our 07 Sonata 2.4l but it doesn't use any noticeable amount of oil in the 4k miles/4 month changes it gets with Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5-20. 78k trouble free miles too.

Mine doesn't use a drop, that I can tell.
Have run 10w30 on 2 oci's but the rest has been 5w20's.
At 42k+ now.
 
My 2011 now has 48k. It takes more than the book says to fill, per the dipstick. Usually 5 1/2 quarts. In a 5k run, DEPENDING ON THE OIL, I may add 1/2 quart. Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 seems to burn more than others. 5w30 oils like Goil and even Havoline Dino seem to burn less. And continuous 75 mph runs, for hours, seem to use a bit.

I was always told that you were better off to use a bit of oil, as it helps keep cylinders lubed above the ring. ?

The thing you have to really watch on these GDI cars, is bad thermostats. If the car thinks it is running cold it enriches the fuel load and will, literally, flood the oil with unburned gas. I have been arguing with the local dealer for well over a year about my second thermostat which sticks, sometimes. Even bought a replacement but have yet to put it in myself. Shouldn't have to, since the car is in warranty. My biggest gripe with the car is the dealerships. My local has changed hands 3 times. Some of the service guys were so bad that I will have to think hard about another Hyundai.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I'll run 5w30 PU or PP next run and check around the pan for leakage. Most of my driving is 50-60 mph highway.

I'm not sure how to check the pcv. I don't have any gas smell like like I've read about on the Hyundai Forums.

Yes my dealer is pretty useless and beaurocratic. I avoid the dealer except for buying oil filters.
