Hello,

I have an 17 Sonata Hybrid (2.0 GDI) with around 40k mi on it. Mostly use 0W-20 or 5W-20 (M1, PP or other synthetic). OCI is 6k or 6mos (driving around 12k per year). Recommend OCI is either 5k or 7.5k using Dino.

The car has been sitting there for at least 3-4 days since I work from home. Just checked the oil and it just passed the "L" mark by 3mm. Had around 5500mi since last oil change.

Is it a normal oil consumption?

Put in about 3/4 QT and it is now at full mark. No or little oil consumption in the past. No weird noise so or anything.

Thanks!

I'm paranoid about checking oil in my 2 liter Soul. Check it several times a week. Always yelling at my kids and girlfriend: check, check, check. I've probably put about four ounces of oil in in 1500 miles, I got a good deal with VWB but it's always had higher consumption than other oils. I use 5w30 but have used 5w20 without problems. My experience with any HyunKia engine is once it gets to the add mark it can drop fast.

Change every 4K. A great oil is the Toyota Oil in 0w20.
This is no joke. The stuff really works well for Hybrids. Dealer pricing is reasonable.

why would you want to void the 10 year engine warranty?

To OP:
Any oil consumption can be annoying but less than 1qt/5000miles is not bad IMO.

6k syn oil change is perfectly fine for that car. I prefer 5w30 in Hyundai/Kia motors myself.

And I agree with Rand, 1qt/5k or less is well within spec. Chances are the dealer would not even test it if you told them that. Just keep an eye on it and if it gets worse take it back under the power train warranty.

Thanks. It is just difficult to accept this 1qt / 5k mi is "normal" thing.

I used to ran 10k mi with M1 or PP on a 1MZ-FE engine (known for burning oil.) it burned less than 1/4 QT per 10k mi and a 1996 engine design.

Need to check the oil level more often then...Š

I am the second owner so 100k powertrain warranty will not apply. Same for the extended warranty I have.

Some work better than others. Have you seen a UOA or VOA on Toyota? If you did, you may have answered your reply a little differently. Tere are a couple (at least) buried in the VOA / UOA Board rooms. There might be a couple more on various Toyota forums.
Or.... you can buy Mobil-1 AP/EP. Very good also, with an edge on longetivity.
