I have never seen an engine easier to change plugs on than a Ford 32V V8. Plugs swaps on the Coyote 5.0L are going to be cake.

Trucks will stay easy unless they try to down size the front end or stuff a really really big engine into it.
 
plugs on anything with the 6.2L might suck. looks like they are doing 2 plugs per hole with one on top like on a 2v and then one on the bottom with an LSx style coil and wire.

If properly engineered, why not? A buddy of mine is a Ford tech and he just did training on the 3.5 EcoBoost and apparently the engine has been beefed up for the turbos in just about every was possible (block, crank, rods, pistons, etc.).

The EcoBoost bottom end is probably going to be up there with the Supra and 03 Cobra on stock short block durability.
 
the ecoboost will own the 5.0.........

plus with a little tune the car makes massive amounts more power... see people running mid 12's with just a tune, stock boost levels in a 4500lb Taurus.......

that is a HUGE difference between the stockish 14.1-high 13's the car does.... I can't wait to see someone up the boost big time or upgrade the turbo's.......

there will be a new ruler at Ford... give it time

its just such a shame the new SHO is such a heavy, ugly contraption


people nowadays don't think its a good idea to have a turbocharged truck... and would rather have the 5.0

funny, because I don't see people running around the place hoarding all the non turbo older diesel trucks... which are DOGS!


a diesel is still a reciporating engine, if they can change their designs from whimpy N/A workhorses, to [censored] near impressive turbocharged beasts..... same can be done with a gas engine...... all in how they build it. Just hope Ford doesn't cheap out on it...... that will determine wether they suck or not

+1 There is no reason it can't be engineered to last. We have the technology to do so. Now, if it was or not will be the key factor in determining if it is a good engine or not.

honestly i don't see any need for a v8 nowadays except in maybe heavy duty trucks, commercial vehicles, and limos. i'd much rather have an ecoboost 3.5L in the 2011 mustang than the 5.0L, but of course ford has to appeal to the older generation that still thinks anything less than a v8 is inferior

oh don't get me wrong i love the sound and the torque of my v8, but the new v6's can make just as much power while also weighing less and getting better gas mileage. it's a no-brainer for me as i'm all for less weight in newer cars

Actually, that's not quite so simple to do. Diesel and gasoline engines operate on a fundamentally different thermodynamic cycle. Diesels approximate constant-pressure combustion, gasoline engines approximate constant-volume combustion followed by adiabatic expansion (in practice there's some overlap because neither cycle is ideal). Diesels CANNOT suffer detonation, because the fuel doesn't even appear in the cylinder until its time for combustion to begin. You can feed a diesel air at temperatures and pressures that would cause a gasoline engine to self-destruct instantly through detonation. Also, the constant-volume combustion of gasoline engines puts a much larger impulse loading on connecting rods, bearings, etc. at very high power settings/low RPM because so much more of the combustion cycle happens right at top-dead-center than in a diesel, where the burn runs through the a large portion of the piston down-stroke. That's why diesels can be designed to produce so much more low-end torque without self-destructing.

The sudden pressure rise at a fixed volume is the limiting factor in the Otto cycle.

The upshot of that is that diesels can run 100% of the time under full turbo boost. Gasoline engines can't. At least not easily and not with the same amount of boost. As I said, depending on how the direct injection cycle is timed, the Ecoboost may overcome some of that. But not all of it- its still going to be fundamentally an Otto-cycle engine, best suited to short bursts of 100% power and long periods of 80% power is better served first choice by a turbo-diesel, second (lower initial cost being the attraction) choice by a large-displacement, relatively low-compression, normally-aspirated gasoline engine.


Don't get me wrong... its been a long time since an engine design has made me drool like the Ecoboost does. I just think an actual WORKING truck (as opposed to a sport truck) is not the right place for it. Just like no one did a lot of heavy towing with a supercharged Ford Lightning or a Dodge SRT-10 with the aluminum Viper V10.

I don't think you'll find a n/a V6 anywhere that stacks up the new 5.0L, or the LS3, or the Boss 6.2, or the 6.1 Hemi...

Just remember, V8s can get DI and turbos too. There will always be a place for V8s, even if gas sky rockets. Just look at Europe.

From what I understand gm's gen5 small blocks are getting di.

From a quick Google it seems in 2007 they had a 6.2 with di that was producing another 50 hp.
