2010 Equinox consuming synthetic oil

i guess i got lucky with muy saturn i only purn about half a quart in 3500 miles with 197,000 on the clock. Funny you should mention synthetic oil... i used syn. at about 55000 on the saturn and thats when it developed its half quart thirst. Prior to that it was zero. The syn. was consumed at a level too great to mention at least a quart every 1000.

I've had enough new cars over the last fifteen years or so to know that the norm is that they do not consume measurable amounts of oil, at least not measurable by observation of the dipstick.

If the guy lost a whole quart out of the engine, I'd wonder if maybe he picked up a gallon jug of M1 by mistake, and started a quart low.

The new Nox 2.4 is made in Tennessee I believe. The transmission is made in S. Korea, though there were/are plans to start making it in the states soon (maybe already).

I have driven a couple of the new Equinoxes and the transmission is an odd beast. It feels very strange starting off from a stop, like the stall speed is too high on the torque converter. And you run through 3 shifts before 25MPH. Maybe they have fixed these issues but my impression was not good.

Exactly.
For most of us over many years, checking the oil was just not necessary.
The level never changed much.
It may be that some newer engines are consuming more mearsurable amounts of oil.
There is a convenience factor in not having to worry about oil level.
There is also the neglect factor, which may lead to some engine failures among the average users.
Certainly most of us would check frequently on a vehicle new to us, to ensure that we know what to expect of the vehicle's oil consumption.
Many folks no longer bother to check their engine oil, ever, just as many folks have no idea how to drive something with three pedals.

I'm not at all surprised by this; my ex-GM tech friend says the 3.4L is their most unreliable V6. I had the ancient pushrod 3.1L in my previous vehicle and it developed an engine wrecking gasket leak as well. My Acura needs 1/5th of the work that the Lumina did at a lower mileage, so why bother? Until GM improves their reliability I just won't buy them. If three year old Malibu's are rated better than average by CR I might give that one a look but that's it

It is different. The Malibu engine is not DI. The 2010 Equinox (and Terrain) 2.4L is a brand new engine for GM.

I'm going to keep an eye on the oil level in my Nox and see what happens. I might switch to Synpower or PU if I notice any consumption with the M1.

Isn't the 2.4L the same one that they were putting in the late saturn ions, and aura's before saturn shut down? A stroked ecotec 2.2L basically?
