I think this engine might be powerful enough to pull off in a Buick, but maybe not. I'm sure GM can do some tweaking to get some lower end torque out of it. And to Ed, if GM brings back the 3.8L (probably never going to happen) then Chrysler needs to bring back the 4.0L Inline 6.

I second that!

I think you're right.
I don't think GM would be offering a complete dog in a car they see as an important contributor to the company's future properity.
Still, the 2.2 version of this engine has a vaguely unpleasant sound to it, seems to have hidden a good chunk of its rated output, and is not especially smooth, or at least I have found these things in a G5 I have driven occasionally.
You would never confuse the 2.2 Ecotec with any Honda engine.

I think there's a certain amount of unnecessary worrying here.

The 2.4 will likely find its way into a small number of cars, and the majority of those will likely be sold for some sort of fleet or rental duty.

It would seem to me that GM is only offering the 2.4 as a way to do anything to increase their CAFE numbers, since the government is increasing the pressure to raise those numbers significantly in the next several years. We may start seeing engines offered in cars, that are in reality only there for the CAFE ratings.

It would seem that we're seeing this with the Equinox as well. GM is touting the 32 MPG economy of the 2.4 Ecotec, but most folks will likely opt for the V6 instead.

If the Ecotec in the LaCrosse and the Equinox is as competent as the base engines used by their competition, then GM has succeeded.

And there you have it folks. Most people will be pretty stupid, and assume the 6-cyl. is what GM is basing it's MPG on... The exact same thing 95% of idiot-import buyers do...
