200hr oci for kubota L2501?

I've never been a fan about how car makers are stretching out oci. 10k miles seems to be the standard nowadays. Now back to the kubota, looks like the L2800 which was the similar sized model before the L2501 was brought out called for a 100 hour engine oil change interval, well the 2501 calls for a 200hr oci. Some manuals say 400hrs for some reason depending on whether it's the paper manual or the electronic manual.

Anyways, with that being said is changing a 6 quart sump on a little 3 cylinder 1.4 liter diesel every 200 hours sufficient? I'm definitely not doing 400hrs, this thing can eat a lot of dust when I break out the brush hog and go out and mow.

Yeah, 100hrs seems like a good interval. These engines run pretty much at pto rpm all the time with the HST, so I keep it around 100hrs but will do a bit more if I'm busy.
So you think the 200 hour interval is too long?

How many hours are you putting on yours per year? On my 4701 I'm changing every two years which is roughly 100hrs. Service manual for mine says change oil ever 200hrs if I recall correctly. With the donaldson air filter setup I can guarantee you it isn't eating any dust. My inner filter has yet to look any different than brand new even when the outer filter was nearly plugged.

The 2501 doesn't have the smaller inner filter. I think you can buy it if you want, but doesn't come from the factory with it. I probably put 100hrs a year on it.

I change the engine oil in mine every year, but I think usage matters more. I rarely go over 100 a year these days.

If you were using it 8 hours a day, on a continued basis, I would go the max suggested in the book. If you use it sparingly, do once a year. Cant hurt, and cheap insurance.

correct, no inner filter on the 2501. I got one for mine from Messicks and went with a K&N main filter. thinking on going back to the paper one though, it probably filters better.....tractor air filters get dirty quick.

Thought about making a snorkel for the intake to see if it keeps the filter cleaner.

They want quite a bit for an oil change. I think it was $75 for the kubota oil and filter. Could probably save some money and get some rotella though, but even the filter was like $35 or something outrageous like that.

Okay, so the cannister is setup to accept an inner filter? My air filter the last time I checked wasn't dirty, but it was a grayish black color. I think it sucks up the exhaust. The intake and exhaust are very close to each other on this engine lol

I cross referenced some champion filters as they are way cheaper. I change it yearly though, as stated before. The Kubota filters are very well made, but made for the extreme OCIs. And they are expensive. I might be able to tell you the number if I remember for the champion filter, I think I got 3 or so from Rock Auto for cheap. I do not use Kubota motor oil, never have, in any of my 4 machines. My latest change back in the first of this year was with Supertech Synthetic 15w40..........Cheap good oil. 20 bucks should do it oil and filter, plus no trip to the Kubota place.

There is no need for Kubota oil. Nothing special there.

If I were using my machines day in and day out, for the long OCI I would run the Kubota filter

Check out Messicks, they have greta prices on Kubota filters and the site is easy to navigate.

https://www.messicks.com/catalogs/kubota/l2501hst should bring you to the L2501 page

https://www.messicks.com/parts/kubota/TA040-93220 is the inner filter previously discussed

Thanks for that part number on the inner filter. I remember now I went to the local dealer a while back to get one and at the time they didn't have one listed for the 2501. You had to get one for the 3301 and then the parts guy either didn't have it or couldn't find it, not quite sure what the reason was.

The manual for my “2018” L2501 calls for a 400 hr OCI. Way too long for me IMO. I do every other year, which is about 100 hrs or so.

I wonder when they changed it? Seems like some of their machines have the engine’s OCI as if it was in some ideal environment like it was a generator running 24/7 for a few weeks. 400 hrs would be very easy to do then IMO. Put that engine in a tractor used in the dust and changes need to be made IMO.

*Not sure if you’ve done your first OCI or not, but they take around 5.5 quarts of oil rather than the 6 that the manual says.

I think 400hrs is a typo. It's a common complaint online depending on whether you look at the manual online or the hardcopy. The people who make these probably don't know anything about engines or tractors. 400hrs is the oci for the hst/hydraulic fluid. It's a shared sump. That's the whole purpose of the thread. They've already extended it out to 200 from 100 I believe. The older L2800 called for 100hr engine oil changes. Which is basically the equivalent of my L2501. Maybe they're thinking since the L2501 runs on ulsd, where they only had 500ppm low sulfer diesel back when the 2800 was around that they could lengthen the oci.

You have been here long enough to know that you need to do a UOA to determine this answer. Most books recommend 200 hours and my John Deere book says 400 for synthetic. I believe it after taking several UOAs myself.

I've been doing 200+ hr oil change intervals on my Kubota. Here's my last report:
Kubota 11-22.webp

If I was running 100hrs a year I'd probably do annual oil change, skip the filter. If you really want to optimize for your use and oil then start testing the oil.
