I don't have them with me so I'm going by memory, but the Purolator oil filters I have appear to be relabeled Mann filters, made in either Germany or Mexico (I forget). One thing I've learned working for a worldwide Fortune 500 aerospace firm is that so long as your products are made by a large, brand name supplier, where they assemble them is not of great importance. The airliner components we make in our Brazilian and Mexican plants meet the exact same quality standards as those of our Michigan plant. Our Brazilian-assembled truck transmissions are also used worldwide.
If your VW is still under warranty, you might want to take that into account, and have documentation that whatever's been put in your ride meets the VW 502 cert. If out of warranty, you MIGHT be able to use ANY name brand synthetic oil of an appropriate weight; many folks have gotten excellent used oil analysis with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, for example, a non-502 oil. Taking advatage of coupon oil change specials is tougher with a VW/Audi due to the 502 spec, and it all comes down to your comfort level in bypassing that.
