Is there anything wrong with using a Havoline synthetic oil in my VW? Is the specified Castro oil that much better?

The reason i ask i that i can get a better oil change price from Texaco lube than other locations. Also they offer is Purolator oil filter. Is this ok or should i buy a OEM filter from VW?

thank you,

Since you're in the gas forum... we know it's not a TDI.

Nothing really wrong with a Purolator cartridge filter. I think it's made in India. The only thing wrong is it's fairly pricey.

you can get Mann filters online for cheaper (ie ebay, amazon, www.germanautoparts.com ,etc)

Havoline Synthetic oil is fine, as long as it is the 5w40. This oil meets the requirements for VW for 502.00 oil specification.

ok thanks for your input. It saves me several bucks so as long as its comparable to Castrol Oil then i'm good.

Pretty sure ALL purolator oil filters are made in USA.

I think the Purolator oil filter for VW, just like Mann, are made in Mexico. Better than the made in China Fram.

I don't have them with me so I'm going by memory, but the Purolator oil filters I have appear to be relabeled Mann filters, made in either Germany or Mexico (I forget). One thing I've learned working for a worldwide Fortune 500 aerospace firm is that so long as your products are made by a large, brand name supplier, where they assemble them is not of great importance. The airliner components we make in our Brazilian and Mexican plants meet the exact same quality standards as those of our Michigan plant. Our Brazilian-assembled truck transmissions are also used worldwide.

If your VW is still under warranty, you might want to take that into account, and have documentation that whatever's been put in your ride meets the VW 502 cert. If out of warranty, you MIGHT be able to use ANY name brand synthetic oil of an appropriate weight; many folks have gotten excellent UOAs with Pennzoil Platinum 5W/30, for example, a non-502 oil. Taking advatage of coupon oil change specials is tougher with a VW/Audi due to the 502 spec, and it all comes down to your comfort level in bypassing that.
