2009 Camry Oil Consumption

IMG_3350.webp

Well it’s running guys. I have the old spark plugs in for now and will put a few miles on it before changing the oil again and swapping the plugs. Also going to put some liqui moly in it before changing the oil. So far so good. Thanks to everyone on here for the advice and support!

So far so good with a few exceptions..oil is staying put but my fuel economy dropped quite a bit. I wonder if my plugs are fouled and or the pcv needs replaced again. Only driven about 50 miles but i can tell a difference. Any ideas?

Hmmm, strange. The 50 miles that you've driven so far, have they been similar conditions to what you've driven before or all city etc something like that?

I doubt the plugs are fouled if you ran it for a while with the old ones and then put the new ones in. At this age and mileage, replacing the PCV won't hurt.

I would be inclined to do some mixed driving city and highway for a couple of weeks just to see what the mileage is like. Do you have a handcalc baseline or perhaps miles per tank average that you can compare against?

I dont really have anything to compare. Driving is just local around the house. Opened it up a little but nothing crazy. The weird thing is it’s acting like it did when I first got the car as far as the fuel economy and I did replace the plugs and once I did that things changed dramatically to better economy but now it seems like it’s back to how it was when I got the car if that makes any sense.

Definitely hear what you're saying, I think I would still drive it around for several days. One thing you could do is pull one or two of the plugs to see how they look. Have you clean the mass air flow sensor as well?

I know 50 miles isn’t much to really gauge fuel economy, but I can see the gauge literally dropping down as I drive..it did that when I first got the car

Update: put about 120 miles on it, not a drop lost in consumption. However now ive got a noise from the crankcase. Its not a belt. I took the oil cap off and the pressure was released and the noise went away. Swapped out the pvc valve as the first step to solve this. Any ideas..?

I tried uploading my video but no luck. I did swap the pcv valve but no change driving into work today. Drives fine but that whining sound when idling is driving me crazy. I did just put new spark plugs in but I don't think that would do this. I also put a little but too much oil in when I changed it last but not even a quarter of a qt. past the dot. It's a mystery to me right now...I also replaced the pcv hose when I put the new on one as well.

Another thing I should note is the new spark plugs are ruthenium and maybe that's causing the issue. I'll put the other ones back in and see if the problem goes away.

I haven't had a chance to really go over all the lines. while thinking about it, it seemed to appear after I put in those new spark plugs.

I wouldn't think the spark plugs themselves are an issue, but perhaps something was knocked off during. Or perhaps something wasn't reconnected at some point.

PCV can cause issues. Since you replaced it, maybe start at all of the lines/hoses related to the PCV? What brand valve did you use?

the one that was on prior to the soak was oem (or at least amazon said so). I had a spare that came with a hose i needed after the original cracked when i took it off. I went ahead and put that junky spare on one last night to see how it would do today. maybe made it worse ha..

maybe i should stop at autozone today and see what they have as far as a replacement pcv valve
